I have no traditions regarding food or anything else on New Year's Day. We just got back from our morning walk and after working on a project I'm working on, I'm going to go out to the shop and see about making some new utensils. Then perhaps we'll watch a game or movie or something this afternoon - we shall see!

My only tradition is usually to watch the Rose Bowl football game. However, this year, the Oregon Ducks will be playing in the Orange Bowl, so I'll have that on instead. I won't do both. That's too much sitting.

I also take down whatever holiday decorations I have up. Since I am in a rental in AZ for the winter, there wasn't much to take down this year. Already done, and it's only 8:30 am. 😊

There is no traditional food in my day.

Not really, but just by coincidence, tonight we're having left over corned beef with horseradish sauce, probably with potatoes and carrots, and maybe some cabbage. No black eyed peas.

New Year's Day used to be a big day to watch college football for me. No longer, for some reason. Just a day to relax.

Actually, I will be calling some friends and soi to wish the a Happy New Year.

Yes… for the last 26 years, at least.

Traditional Japanese New Year's cuisine revolves around
Osechi Ryori: beautiful, multi-layered lacquer boxes filled with foods chosen not for trend, but for meaning. Each bite is a wish. Each color, a promise.

New Year’s Day brings Ozoni, a warm, comforting mochi soup, and Mochi, pounded rice cakes symbolizing strength, unity, and renewal.

Ultimate Guide to Osechi Ryori (Japanese New Year Food ...

Among the Osechi staples:

  • Kuromame (sweet black soybeans) for health and diligence

  • Datemaki (rolled omelet) for learning and wisdom

  • Shrimp, bent with age, for a long life lived fully

The intention, tradition, and food that represents:
May the year ahead be steady… fortunate… and well-lived.

We used to eat the 12 grapes at midnight, but not anymore. I believe more and more in God, who is the only one I need. I woke up today and went straight to the gym, now working a little and then relaxing. Happy New Year everyone!!!

I dont think that any particular food brings us luck, most of that is due to our actions.

Usually on New Year's Eve we have shrimp cocktail and a bottle of champagne or white wine. As for New Year's Day, we eat what we have a taste for.

We prepare banitza (a phyllo dough pastry with feta cheese, Bulgarian specialty) and some fortunes in it for the coming year. Since I did not have cornel-tree buds, I wrote the fortunes on a piece of paper and each one of us pulled a few. Here is a list of some fortunes from this year's banitza:

May everyone understand your jokes.

May you lose weight exactly where you want to.

May you always like your body when you look in the mirror.

May your heart feel light.

May you always find what you’re looking for.

May you always have small change when you need it — and big bills too.

May you have someone who dances to your bagpipe, has the ears for it, and may you have fun together.
(a wish for harmony, understanding, and shared joy)

May you have friends who truly listen to you.

Health.

May you walk every day along a sea of ideas.

May your dream chase you — and catch you.

Pork and sauerkraut is a family tradition since I was born and we still follow it today. It's not so much about eating for good luck and it is having comfort food and remembering our family holiday tradtions.
