I was 6 when I got my first Monopoly board game. The entire neighborhood would sit around the card table and play. I was always the shoe. My grandkids aren't really into board games yet with the youngest still being only 4. But it's definitely a game I plan to get them.
Speaking of birthday/Anniversary's I read the other day it's about to be the 50th anniversary (11/10) of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Made me download the song and play it for my grandkids.

Happy birthday to the Monopoly game. I was never a fan and seldom played. It just took too long. That said my grandson is a fan and likes to play.

I had no idea Monopoly had been around that long. Did you know:
Parker Brothers prints more Monopoly money each year than the U.S. Mint prints real currency?

OH my gosh, I love Monopoly, Patricia! I have seen several stories on Parker Brothers' classic game but, didn't realize it was their anniversary! Thank you so much for sharing.

I played as a kid and then with my kids. But Risk and Axis Empires were my favorite. Guess that's why I ended up in the Army.

Monopoly is a family tradition. When we have family reunions or other gatherings, we always set aside time for Monopoly.
It is a great game, when it is played by the rules.
The problems arise when players agree to have a "pot" on Free Parking, or give a debtor a chance to pass go before paying the rent they owe, or otherwise bend the rules. The game that should have lasted 45 minutes or so drags on for hours; the players get bored, they don't want to play it again.
Play by the rules, no mercy, bankrupt your opponents!
I have a nice collection of letters from Parker Brothers, pre-internet, when I wrote them and asked for clarification of certain rules. My opponents often groan when I correct them on some error they have made, and prove my point with the letter from Parker Brothers (they are in sleeve protectors, they are kept in the game box).
For example, if you are in Jail, and you throw doubles, you get out free, right? Yes. But do you go again, because you threw a double? NO, you do not.

Wow I did not know that it came to be in 1935. Thanks for sharing that information I assumed it came to be in the 60's when we started playing it.

Those were definitely the days when a board game could keep us occupied all night. No one read the rules we played by our own rules back then and today.
