When I was much younger, my parents liked to vacation at Lake Tahoe. From there, it is not a long drive to Carson City, the Capital of Nevada. They have a museum that I loved to visit. The exit from the museum is down and  through a simulated silver mine.

I've never been in a gold mine but certainly wouldn't like the experience those souls in CO had.

I have never been in a gold mine, coal mine or any other mine that I know of. After that Denver situation, I do not believe I will be entering one either! EVER!

We did a field trip with the kids in our homeschool group to a gold mine.  It was on the AZ/Nevada border.

No, didn't realize it was a "thing". There was a bad accident in one mine just recently, a guide died.

I have done some cave exploring Peter Mohylsky, Beach Broker  (Bronsons cave CA) where once in, our group shut off all our hand-held lighting & I have never been in pitch blackness before. For some, it was terrifying. Hand right in front of your face, even touching your nose, you couldn't see it.

No, I don't think so. I saw that story on TV last night. I did go up in some very old elevators in Germany and was a little uncomfortable.

 Going underground was not the problem; the mine did not collapse.

It was a mechanical failure of the elevator.

  Tomorrow, millions of people worldwide will take elevators to the upper floors of skyscrapers, then will return down those same elevators.  Is there a difference?

I would never go underground, and being in Colorado, it was tough listening to this accident.

I haven't, but I would.  I mean I drive a car every day and there are plenty of fatalities daily in car accidents.

Well we just had a major accident of people going down in a gold my in Colorado and one dead and 12 people trap for 6 hours.

I panned for gold at Cripple Creek in Colorado, one of the events planned for us when I won a scholarship to study numismatics (coin collecting) in Colorado Springs as a young numismatist. My first job out of college was working for a foreign exchange, commodities and interest rate trading division of a large firm- and after a couple of promotions- I managed the Precious Metal Structured Derivatives and Special Business desk. I dealt with all the quirky non-generic types of trades- everything from global Central Bank purchases and sales, physical trades, gold miner hedging of their mining production, swaps, foreign tax shelters using gold, leases, consignments, swaptions etc. Once we had a barrel full of rhodium that was supposed to make a flight at JFK airport- but the Brinks driver got the instructions wrong- and tried to deliver the rhodium to my desk in Greenwich, CT. My team and I joked we should run away with the barrel- as it was worth a lot more than gold at that point. It was a fascinating job- but it was intensely stressful and paid crappy- but I learned a lot quickly.  For all of that crazy- nope- neve went down in a gold mine. I did lots of deals with the largest miners- so I am sure I would have been welcome to visit the mines when I worked in that speciality...but no way was my management going to pay for that, lol.
