Depends on where you live, safety, elevation and preparedness.  It's too late to evacuate now unless you are flying out of town.  Under different circumstances I would have already evacuated to States north of Florida.  However, Helen has taken out 6 of those States so the trip would be endless.

Staying in a secure location with generator backup, food and water is always the option.

No.

Here I am using the internet at the Brevard, North Carolina Public Library.  This is the first day they have been open since "Helene".  The devastation from that Hurricane rivals anything I ever saw in Florida!

We went through Ian which was a huge hurricane and survived thank God! So we are doing the same with Milton staying home.. We already secured the house and have supplies. Now, if I ever moved to another state just because of the hurricanes nope! Many people we know moved to SC and NC recently and were affected by Helene. Most important is to stay calm and take smart decisions. In God's will we'll be ok.

I would never live in Florida, so that decision was made 56 years ago 😂
Regular hurricane and tornado parts of the country are of no interest to me.
God bless those that do and stay...they need the prayers.

There is a weather/Mother Nature risk no matter where you live. For me, it's wildfires and avalanches. The answer would depend on how much one loves everything else about their home town/state.

Home again, home again...

My sister, and her hubby, who live in the Tampa bay area, say that they don't pay much attention to hype of the national news.  The local news is not calling for evacuation.  The are simply putting up the hurricane shutters, and shopping for the essentials and hunkering down for another big storm.

Will- it would depend on where I lived in FL. We did evacuate for Hurricane Andrew and it took us 5 hours to get to Orlando. (it normally takes 3 hours) I've been in our FL in 65 mph winds and that was horrific.

You have to make your own decision.

I cannot relate to the question as I have never experienced or endured storms that devastate towns and communities.

I live in "Earthquake" CA. I do not think about leaving or moving because of them.  As Bob "RealMan" Timm said, those things happen.

All my children and family live in Florida, we stay in communication and prepare well. We pray that God will protect us and keep us in the palm of HIS hand. I have survived at least 10 hurricanes, it is not a fun experience with all the preparations. We have not made the decision to move anywhere else. I do not know of a State that is the safest, do you?

The news reports will discourage some retirees from moving to the area. Naples has been a popular location for second home or a retirement residence for families in Maryland. Today, I am glad that we are still in Maryland.

It is a bad storm year for more than Florida. If this is the beginning of yearly problems, I would probably rethink where I want to live.

Possibly depending on where I live. I have reached out to some of my friends in Central FL and a couple just happen to be out of town. One said they're not evacuating unless they lose power. When I lived in FL people in other states often seemed to think it was going to be worse than it was.

I lived in Ft. Myers for 18 years and have seen some high water. Miton could be the worse storm surge in history. Car pointed north and gone. Hoping most of my friends will do the same. Many old timers are staying put and I am concerned.

No, it depends on where you are. If you are in the direct path, best to either seek higher ground and go somewhere away from the areas most likely to be impacted the most. To some extend it depends on the strength of the storm and its projected path, you may be able to just batten down the hatches and hunker down. A few years ago, there was a hurricane coming and the whole state seemed to evacuate north, in the end, the storm followed them and many got stranded somewhere without gas and adequate shelter. To me that would be more scary and dangerous than trying to ride it out in a safe room in your concrete block home as long as it's not near water that is. General rule, run from water, hide from wind!

I would leave right away and visit family elsewhere.  I wouldn't live in Florida in the first place due to the size of their bugs.  Yon can get a saddle on them and take a ride.
