I'm seeing it as an accent cabinet occasionally, but not common in San Diego yet. It's not for me at this point. If I were single and living in Downtown San Diego with the popular "urban-look" kitchens, maybe?

Yes, it's a trend that we first started using probably 5-7 years ago.  It doesn't work in all homes, but I have it in my home.  I have mostly cabinets, but there is one long stretch of wall that needed something and cabinets made no sense.  So I have open shelves which are basically a "knick-knack" shelf.  I have a plant on them, some oil bottles with a nice design on them, a barrel head that says something about wine and a colorful tin of Scottish candies.

It's not common here, although I have seen it from time to time. I don't like the open shelving - you'd have to keep everything too neat! :-)

I've see a few. It really depends on the size of the kitchen and the amount of storage you have. All my cabinets are full and I can't imagine having less storage. It's valuable kitchen Real Estate and I wonder if it will phase out leaving homeowners to replace it with cabinets.

I am surprised out here in the high desert with plenty of dust I too have seen those shelves. Given back during the wild west days, these shelves were quite plentiful. Dishes were cup in an enclosed hutch.  Even closed cabinets dust does seep inside. I guess if the dishes are used daily dust is not a big issue.

I don't really know, as I've been out of the loop for a while.

Personally, I'm a bit OCD about shelf organization, but that concept does not appeal to me.

I have seen it quite a bit in Austin and my son and daughter-in -law are putting it in their kitchen in their complete remodel of their current home. I won't be following their lead! LOL!

We are seeing more and more of these, and some have ALL shelving above the counters, and only lower cabinets.    Cannot imagine losing my cabinet space.

Some have shelves mostly for decor.

Open shelves seem to be more of a decorative style. Items on the open shelves are often display items and not frequently used. I have seen shelves and cabinets used in combination. Our kitchen is too small to utilize floating shelves.

no, not in this area.  doors on cabinets are common to hide the contents,  unless it might be show worthy.

I see it and I don't think it's a good idea. It seems to be a trendy new thing but it's really just a way for people to save money when remodeling.

The new millennium version of 'pot shelves' LOL

I don't want to SEE 'all that is in my cupboards' and agree, they would collect more dust than if they were behind a cabinet.

It's not something I am seeing in my market.

Haven't seen all that much of it. And I recently read that this idea is on its way out... and a big reason is that everything that sits on open shelving needs constant cleaning.

At the builers show last month they announce the open floor plan was going away, more walls coming.  I think as more people work from home having a private space is becoming very much #1 on the list of features for the houses.
