That largely depends on what the question is, and what the reason for the negativity is. (who knows, the negativity might be deserved?)

Most of the time, I find that it doesn't pay to argue with the naysayers.  It's best to meet negativity with positivity.  Firstly because it brings more positivity into the world, and secondly because it tends to irritate them. ;-)

Frank that happens on occasion here in the rain. After you get to know the personalities it doesn't surprise me when negativity comes from a few.  Honestly I just ignore them.  It's not my style to be negative.  I look on the positive side of life and things and I'm good with that.  Some are, well, you know.....always seemingly finding fault or have a need to be right. Tis what is...

Disagreement is not negativity. Opinions are not right or wrong.
We have different opinions based on our upbringing, values, interests, information sources, experiences, environment, location, role models, etc.

Online forums usually have group rules, often including staying on topic. Discussion on topic A might drift to a related topic, but should probably not jump to a totally unrelated topic. A new thread should be started for a new topic.

Sometimes, we are not aware that topics are related until more information is revealed.

[For example, a strawberry is not a berry, but a banana is a berry.]

On Quora.com, I am the top writer in the world on the topic: Notary Public. I am a knowledgeable certified notary training instructor.  I disabled comments on my answers to questions because there were too many factually incorrect responses from beginners and it was a waste of my time to respond as a free consultant to make corrections.

They are able to post their own answers, and community members can upvote or downvote the best and worst answers.

Reddit and StackExchange are Q&A sites that also allow users to upvote or downvote answers.

I think ActiveRain should also allow an Upvote or Downvote, but only Upvotes are accepted.

With downvotes, users can downvote for bad behavior as well as factually incorrect or unpopular answers.

You know, I love to hear the 'other' opinions - I've changed my opinion, based upon others' remarks here because they shed new light on a topic for me. 

That is 100% totally different from negativity and going totally off-topic to bash you and I find that unacceptable. It's not professional, nor does it help anyone learn anything here. While is is rare, when it happens to me, I simply do not give them the respect of a response.

I don't have time to argue with someone who simply seems miserable in life and loves dragging others into their negativity!

There is no right or wrong answer, everyone here will have a different opinion about what to do. Personally, I dislike keyboard warriors and you will learn the different personalities here very quickly. One thing that drives me crazy is some folks forget this is Q&A and not a discussion forum. You have options here, if you do not want to totally ignore or comment on negativity, you can upvote their comment to acknowledge it. Or as the song goes "just scroll on by" (apologies to Dionne Warwick).
