"Don't jump the gun" comes to mind.  If we make the decision with the best information available at the time, and making a decision is not an option, I think the words "screw up" (hindsight) are too harsh if events later determine it was the wrong decision.

I would always choose to not make a mistake or screw up but do learn from both of them.  I've made some horrendous ones and wouldn't wish them on anyone.  Some weren't learning experiences at all and lead to immense pain that caused permanent damage.
