It's funny how the answer to this question changes through the years. When I was in college I dreamed of the day that I wouldn't have to fix my car, that I could just take it to the shop. Today, as I get closer to the end of my career, I feel successful because I can work with who I want, doing what I want.

It is interesting reading all these comments because it is very subjective.  It is also very fleeting.  I am sure that Roger Bannister felt very successful when he broke that record but then he wondered if he could do better.  He was a med student and went on to be a neurologist but no one knows him from that career.

I wrote a post about this years ago after my mentor and good friend died. For years I was one of those people who measured success in tangible ways...money, position, fame, etc. The eulogy at his funeral was a wakeup call for me, "If success is measured by the number of lives he touched, then he was wildly successful". That sentence got me thinking about what is really important in life and dramatically changed my thoughts on success. It's a journey, not a destination.

I really enjoyed reading these answers.  To me, success means much more than just achieving a set of goals or accumulating wealth and recognition. True success encompasses a sense of grace and humility, as well as a deep appreciation for the blessings in my life, particularly my family (not necessarily blood relatives) and loved ones. It also involves maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle, both physically and mentally, which allows me to enjoy and appreciate my achievements fully. Ultimately, success is about finding joy and fulfillment in both the journey and the destination and striving to live a life that is meaningful and purposeful while also making a positive impact on the world around me.
