A decorating "trend" is something that will be considered hideous in 2 - 5 years, so we will have to buy new stuff to redecorate.

It's usually what the popular TV shows are using/doing or what the hardware stores are overstocked on and want you to think it's popular so they can sell it off.

Some writers like to report on trends, more like to try to influence or create the trends.

I pay little attention to trends because they are short-lived, come & go quickly and are usually only one person's opinion...

I'm not sure what you mean but I've been reading many articles about what is going out of style.

A decorating trend is what the "trendsetters" want it to be. I read the other day of a decorator who stated that green kitchen cabinets are a trend and will never go out of style...don't agree but he's entitled to his opinion.
Decorating trends are no different than when the financial analysts or economists made their predictions or forecasts about what will happen in the coming year. Think of the NAR economists and his predictions. Sometimes they become a self fulfilling prophecy but without people predicting and starting trends, a lot of folks would be out of a job.

I would define a trend in decorating as a trend that will be short until the next new color or design takes its place.
I am confused about the question of putting the cart before the horse.
We are already in the year 2023. The year is already trending.
Are you referring to horse trends?

I prefer timeless over trends!
And, we are almost 1/4 of the way through the year - can you believe it?!!

Weirdly enough, many home "color" trends seem to start in the fashion world.
I'm not in love with the Sherwin Williams colors this year though. Of course, my personal taste is light and bright.
Outside of fashion, I think folks go to the home shows to see what's new and what the decorators like. I went to the Atlanta market this year and there was a lot of Coastal (my favorite), some warm colors, and a good amount of black and white.

Something that brings in a lot of money for a short period of time. Like shag rugs. Starting the trend for the year early, gives manufactures and decorators time to cash in using the trend's theme, over the course of the year.

There is actually an international group that decides on the "color of the year".
