In a word.  NO.

I would with dignity and grace decline the offer for a cigar and say, by all means, please do enjoy your cigar.

Home again, home again...

Absolutely.  I am a cigar smoker, and would be delighted to participate.  Not because I would be worried about offending the client... there are plenty of ways to politely decline without causing an international incident, and I'm sure the client would understand.. but it's rare, these days, for me to have an opportunity to share a cigar "indoors" with a friend.

The only caveat, if it's a Cuban cigar... they tend to be a little stronger than this old man can handle, and I will not likely be able to finish it without turning a lovely shade of green. and returning a portion of the lovely dinner, which I'm sure would offend my hosts.

I have never taken a puff of anything in my life.  If I attempted to smoke a cigar, I would probably cough the client out of his house!  No.  I say thank you, but I don't smoke. But please enjoy one yourself.

Not a chance.  I would acknowledge that I appreciate the gesture but I have to decline.

I would treat it the same way if someone offered me something I'm allergic to.  Let's say you are fatally allergic to ice cream and someone offers you ice cream (because that is important in their culture).  You would gracefully decline.

I would have to thank them and politely decline. Never smoked and do not plan starting now. Too much addiction in my family and not enough to support those vices.

I don't smoke. Trying to smoke the cigar would end up badly.

Now...if the choice was a cigar or a nice after dinner drink, I am sure we could work something out.

No, it would not happen. Same reason I would not cut off my fingers when someone dies (I have a big family and I appreciate finger function), eat fish eyes or chicken butts just because it is someone else's culture.

If you are a cigar smoker or curious to  - YES definitely.

If you're not, politely decline.

I grew up with my best friend's family's Iranian/Jordanean culture.

After dinner we always smoked from an Nargileh or Hookah: Fresh tobacco with a coal on top. I always participated because it was so social and as a teenager I was fascinated that they allowed me to smoke.

Sure! BUT I'm gonna warn them that I would most likely be wasting their cigar . . . one puff and done!
I HATE cigarette smoke with a passion . . . but my grampa loved his cigars and there is something sweet about it for me . . .

If someone does not wish to partake, a simple 'no thank you' should suffice.

Once again, the cultural difference between the US and Canada.  Dinner parties were dying a death about 5 years ago and the Pandemic sealed it.  We're a very insular bunch up here and rarely are non family invited to dine in ones home.  I cannot imagine being invited to smoke indoors other than cannabis  [wink]

No way. I don't smoke anything and never have. I would tell that client I appreciate the offer but as my mother died of lung cancer from smoking for 50+ years, it's something I can't bring myself to do.

Yes, for two reasons.  First, he is making a gesture of friendship with something that is very important to him.  I would gladly accept to solidify that friendship and not unduly offend him.  Secondly, I like cigars and would gladly enjoy one while enjoying their company.  I surmise that he wouldn't offer a cigar to someone that he didn't think would enjoy it.

If it is cultural, I doubt he would offer a cigar to a woman. Even I have a friend lady who likes sometimes to share cigar time with a men company, most of us do not.

Only if YOU want to, I don't think there's a right or wrong. It's like accepting the dinner itself, UP TO YOU. The host would not be insulted if you said "Thank you, I don't smoke cigars", or "Thanks, no dessert for me today"; same thing. Cuban cigars ARE special! Hope it was a Monte Cristo.

Men having a cigar at the end of the dinner was a custom in my parents day. Women did not participate in this ritual, but I remember as a child the wonderful smell of good cigars to this day.  And, no, I would not want anyone to smoke a cigar or anything else in my house today.  Hopefully your client has a "smoking room" or that you were invited outside.  Back to your question, if I were offered a cigar and you really wanted to participate, no law says you shouldn't if you want to.  If you didn't want to, I would still go outside (where you are hopefully headed) with the client and stand upwind from him while he enjoys his cigar. PS. Way back, I used to smoke the occasional "ladies" cigar on my frequent trips to Europe.  It didn't get me instantly addicted. Cigarettes are a whole different deal: no way would I ever "join" someone in smoking one.  Except for an occasional puff in my teens, have never taken up the habit, thank the lord.

I've smoked maybe 3 cigars in my life.  It's not something I go out of my way to do, but have done with friends.  I'd probably go ahead and smoke the cigar, especially if it was a Cuban.
