We try to run ours at a constant 64.  With the huge hot water radiators, that brings the room temps up to about 68-70.  We've found it more economical to keep a constant heat rather than attempting to warm a cold house.  It dropped to minus 45 here the other night and we remained cozy and warm with no fear of frozen pipes etc.

Now, in the winter?    We use space heaters (both gas and electric) in the mountain house we are staying in.

Much more efficient than running the whole house system.   We keep the barely-used rooms to a tolerable 50 degrees or so, the bedrooms, baths, LR and Kitchen are a toasty warm low 70's.

Heat and AC are OFF at night.  Some mornings (winter) when I wake it is 50 degrees in my home.  I love the cool air - my heavy blankets keep me warm.

66-68 for heat during the day if I am home.

68-70 for AC during the day.

In the colder months, we have the temperature at 68 both day and night. In the summer we usually don't need the A/C - it gets cool enough in the evening to cool the house off and during the day because it's so dry out, it usually remains quite comfortable.

Right now? During the day my house is at 72. At night I will bump it up to 75. That will change dramatically in a couple of months. In the summer my house is at 78.

Yesterday was so gorgeous, 72 outside, thermostat set to 72 and inside it was 77 with candles burning. So I shut it off and opened doors.

I keep the house in the low 60s during the fall/winter. Usually turn the heat off at night too, unless the temps are forecasted to drop into the low 20s. The upstairs HVAC hasn't been turned on this winter. Doesn't make sense to heat the whole 2nd floor for just me. When the youngest visits, he uses a space heater. Much more economical.

If I had to give a set temperature, 78* but it really varies. When it gets cold enough here to need the heater we set it at 75* but it won't kick on until it drops to 74*. Our current weather is 70/60-ish so no need for either heat or a/c, it's a perfect time to open up and enjoy the fresh air.

We have electric heat at our townhome no thermostats so it’s just on or off on a cold a time when we’re not cold it’s off and it’s off most of the time because we live in San Diego

our vacation rental runs off of Nest controller, so it’s all preset, but the gas can turn it on and off as they please otherwise, it’s typically just off

First, is the home insulated like it should be... make a place easier to heat is the first step.

Second, more than one way to heat a place lets you play the energy market. Love Jotul woodstoves. Also have a wood furnace. Put in a heat pump (lucky to have the lowest electric costs in the state from a local co op utility that is not for profit) have oil furnace, gas and electric heater so you can shift the mix for heating.

Third, you are wearing a t-shirt and shorts and shivering. Put on a sweater, dress with layers. Have a cozy lap blanket or quilt over you while watching the movie.

Any warmer than 66 to 68 and I'm way too hot in a Maine home. Turn heat down an hour before heading to bed.. keep it warmer in living areas and doors shut to unused bedrooms, other house space. Leaving for a few hours, turn your heat down. When you heat with wood and have plenty, you don't have to be worried about energy costs Joan Cox .

We're back into  70 degree weather now so during the day nothing runs as it's not necessary.  At night it's on 68.   But by summer time it will be entirely different, especially since we can get up over 100+.

My main source of heat is a wood stove. So most of the time if it is a sunny day, I keep the house around 65 with just passive solar. If we are getting a storm I am known to get the house up to 70+ to stay warm. But I am blessed with a husband who lights a fire every morning before I come out looking for coffee.

We have a two story house with duo thermostats.  We keep the temperature upstairs at 70 degrees and downstairs at 73 degrees in the daytime and at night upstairs is set an 69 degrees and downstairs at 68 degrees.  We use our fireplace quite often on cold nights.  It's in the family room.  We don't set the thermostat below 80 degrees in the heat of the summer.

The thermostat stays the same day and evening. 70 degrees F. The reason is this. Everything in the house absorbs the heat. If we lower the temperature then everything in the house experiences a loss of heat. I believe this would cause me to use more natural gas. NOW when the flash freeze came through we raised the temperature a couple of degrees to 72 F before the artic blast subsided the house was down to 69 degrees F

I usually have it set around the clock to 62 degrees. When it's really cold, a lot of the apartments in the building raise their thermostats- and it's felt even in units that have the thermostats lower. Heat is included in our monthly common charges - but as the board President, and de-facto Treasurer, I try to save the building money where I can especially considering winter heating is our single highest annual expense.
