I would buy some adjoining land and then build a family compound and also build some beautiful air bnb's on mountains. :-)

And I'd splurge on more seafood!

NO, no need to invest, just give (maybe I'll buy just one more additional vehicle and more boneless spicy chicken wings). my retirement and medical insurance (until patching into Medicare) needs are already set up for life.

In short, I'll be one of those "fools" who blows it ALL in two years!

It would be an interesting two years. LOL

The winnings would all go into investments, including rental property and I would live off of the returns.  I have never played, though, so unless someone gives me a ticket it is not going to happen.

Just one and done:

274 Coast Blvd, La Jolla, CA 92037 | MLS# 220006961 | Redfin

I'd become a part-time world traveler and a part-time homebody here in one of my favorite La Jolla homes. I'd knock on the door, "My wife loves your home, how much?" They'd say "not for sale" and then I'd open a suitcase full of cash, pause, and they'd hand me the keys.
No need to invest in real estate other than homes I'd live in around the world at that point, since living on the interest alone would be more than enough. But, I would start making some dreams come true for others - that would be fun!

Home is where the hearth is.

The purpose behind investing (at least for me) would be to earn enough money to support my lifestyle and spending choices.

If I won the current Powerball, which is currently about 1.8 Billion dollars as of this Saturday morning, I would no longer have any need to invest in anything, having fully accomplished that goal.

Hollywood movie stars in their start-up came into mega money and in turn, the smart ones after having splurged on all things imaginable bought Real Estate for write off and investment. Where else can you park money safely and make money to boot? If you have large family and want to leave a legacy, I would buy the prime properties especially income producing and large tracts of land. But here's the paradox. Like Wrigley and Hurst, who acquired so much land, their tax structure overwhelmed them making them trade land against taxes due. Too big and your problems take over. In the end, help yourself, others and give it away so it doesn't bother your life

Absolutely.  Houses, land, farm land especially.  Residential, SFR, MFR, and maybe some commercial and industrial for an even mix... plus the losses on commercial right now would be nice for tax purposes.  LOL!  I might also buy a winery, since they were exempt from all the lockdown rules and water rules in our state since the governor owns one.

If you look at the 1% most of their wealth is from real estate.  So heck yeah I'd buy more real estate!  I'd just be REALLY careful about the laws of where I'm buying and make sure they aren't going "full stupid" like San Diego is trying to do with registration and reporting requirements and fines for vacancy.

THEN I would open a 24 hour-home care VET OFFICE in my county with multiple locations. We are sorely lacking these services.
But no one would know about this except my attorney and money manager . . . LOL

I would:

Buy an oceanfront home for me.

Purchase a home for my son, set up in my family trust.

Gift enough money to my two best friends to pay off their mortgage and retire them.  One already is retired.

Set up charitable non-profits to care for abandoned and rescued animals both wild and domestic.

I'd have to buy a lottery ticket first, to be able to win. Presuming I did, I would first set up a more meaningful family trust, then a philanthropic foundation. Given my chance of cashing the winning lottery ticket, I probably have PLENTY of time to do so.

That is 1.7 BILLION dollars.
No, I would NOT invest in more homes.
This that much money one can create an atomomous enterprise, fully funded, that could exist in perpetuity. And their in lies the PROBLEM.
Salvation Army received a BILLION dollar gift from the Koch wife and has since become an enterprise accoutable to no one meanign they have abandonded the vision of the founder and now doing their own 'corp' thing.
Here is what I do know.
I did not earn the money so I cannot spend it on myself.
Discipline would be needed to keep personal changes to cosmetic, that my fundamental values remain untouched. Although I love my 10-year-old Honda Pilot, with 1.7 BILLION I just may opt for a EV SUV.

When John Jacob Astor the Ist was asked on his deathbed in 1848- he replied “If I could live all over again, I would buy every square inch of Manhattan”. In case you aren't familiar with the Astor name -  he was the first multi-millionaire in the nation and his son and another relative (William Waldorf Astor) created the famous Waldorf Astoria hotel. John Jacob Astor the IV famously died on the Titanic.  I will be discussing more on the Astors in an upcoming episode of my podcast.
