Yes! I owned a home in Illinois built in 1972 and it had an electrical fire in January 1994 from aluminum wiring burning in the walls before it finally ignited and caused major damage. Before the fire, weird things started happening: 1) light bulbs kept burning out, 2) Ceiling Fan took off like a helicopter out of control, 3) blow dryer and curling iron burned out after plugging them into the sockets, 4) Electrolux vacuum cleaner plug scorched the wall where I plugged it in and the vaccuum cleaner burned out completely. My home was a ranch with siding, typical of what builders built in Lake and Cook County where Lyn Sims is from in the 1970's. The house next door to me also caught fire and had the same aluminum wiring. It burned down the year before mine did. When I bought the house, there were no Home Inspectors and I had no idea what type of wiring was in the walls. Also, the furnace kept going out throughout November and December and the Furnace guy kept getting it restarted by making me pay for a new limit, but the limit switches kept going and never shut the electricity off when it got past the temperature setting. I didn't know I had aluminum wiring until the Fire Marshall and the Home Insurance Company did their investigations. When I asked them, why didn't it catch fire before 1994, they said I was using more electrical power usage than what was typical in the 1970's and 1980's. They didn't know about the fact that aluminum wiring wasn't up to code when the house was built or safe for home owners as years went by until houses like mine caught fire. I don't know what year builders stopped installing aluminum wiring, but by the time I had my house fire, it was too late and I was told, my kids and I were lucky. Other houses had fires during the night and many people died.

I just had a listing that had part aluminum wiring. It was the first house that I know had it since I started my real estate career so I do not think there is much in our Elk Grove area.

The new stuff being built would not recognize any other type of wiring being used. The most modern, functional & inexpensive code required goes to work

Yes it's quite common in the condos I sell and 100% acceptable where it's allowed and copper where it's required. I've seldom sold a house with 100% copper.

Haven't seen it here yet. It is cheaper than copper but can be more of a fire hazard if not installed correctly and it rusts, is softer and can be easily cut, broken or damaged.

Homes built in the 70s here had (and still do) aluminum wiring. Provided it is disclosed and the home owner knows what's required, what is different, all will be well. My parents bought a fancy smancy 4br/2bth manufactured home from Alcan Aluminum Co back in the late 60s and it was the newest trendy product. It came fully furnished and was the coolest thing ever. Even our house key which I still have, was an aluminum key lol No issues with the wiring right up until they sold in 2000.

Very rare here except for an occasional old mobile home in the rural areas. We do have some old knob and tube though perhaps once or twice a year in homes built circa 1900's

Yes, it may be in older homes. Owners don't always know unless they had an issue and had to replace it.

None that I have encountered although a guess would say there's still some yet to be discovered. Mostly found in Central Florida homes built in the mid 60's through mid 70's are prime candidates. Insurers are likely not going to issue policies and which remediation can be very expensive.

had one where it was in the inspection report, buyer didn't buy, EMD was returned as it was during due diligence.

Probably, aluminum was used starting in the '60's due to copper shortages. the issues are mostly with the connections. A relatively easy fix is to have a licensed electrician reinforce the connections with copper.

I've never heard of a house having aluminium wires in any homes in Southern California.

You bet!
That is when an agent needs to know who to call for the AlumiConn fix.
Not a big deal but a 'drama queen' inspector can turn it into one.
