No... the whole purpose behind being a real estate broker is that I'm an independent contractor and can run my own business as long as I don't break any laws. The day I'm an employee in this business is the day I retire.

Yes, when I worked for Vacasa I was classified as an employee but was also still independent as a real estate agent.

No. However, one of the agents in my office (Coldwell Banker) years ago had to be made one, because she was side-hustling as our weekend front desk concierge. CB was sued previously for allowing this to happen without making the agent a W-2 employee due to labor laws.

Working for a developer of a golf course community was classified as an employee with a salary and bonus structure. Also worked directly with a builder as an independent contractor.

In general real estate, always worked as an independent contractor.

I've been both.  I worked for an owner-developer as an employee.  The benefits are that you get a paycheck every two weeks (plus bonus once a month).  You get healthcare benefits, vacation time, 401k, paid training (that was excellent) etc.  You don't have to pay for supplies, advertising, computer, phone, etc.  You get two days off a week and they are truly days off - you don't take work home with you.  Oh, and someone else brought the leads in.

The cons are that you work for The Man.  You have to work when they tell you to.  If they say "Show up at 8am," that's what you do.  Everything takes longer.  If you need new software on your computer, it has to go through a huge corporate process.  You can't just order the software.  The strategic direction of the company may or may not be what you would do.  If there aren't as many leads as you'd like, you just sit around and wait for the marketing team to drum up some business, while getting paid your salary (which was not much).  In my situation, salespeople could only generate leads from past client referrals.  We couldn't do anything else to get business.

It was a good experience.  I'm glad I did it for a while. It worked well for me at that point in my life.  But my situation now works well for me now.

No, I have never been an employee nor employed anyone but an IC in real estate. The beauty of this profession is we are not employed but in business for ourselves. YMMV!

Back in the early 2000's I had all salaried employed licensed agents.  We were considered a "non-traditional" real estate company -- and worked fully as a TEAM (together each achieves more).  My husband and i were the Broker/Owners.  In 2009, when the market drastically changed, I had to let all of them go.  I was the TOP PRODUCER and even i was not bringing in enough money to pay all the salaries -- and the agents were not bringing in any business.  (oh remember those days?) Today, I am SOLO and loving every moment.  Husband is retired but still helps me do things like put up signs, etc.

The only full on employees are redfin agents.

When I was the managing PB for a large franchise company, I was a salaried employee - but also had the option to work on the side as an Independent Contractor.  I had no time to be an IC (outside of representing my husband's spec homes) so rarely used this.

Not personally, but it's possible if you're working for a builder of condo complexes, for example and work in their sales office. Some agents love it, the jobs come with benefits, a steady paycheck, predictable work hours; maybe with commission incentives thrown in as well.
