I went out on my own at the beginning of the recession, knowing that if I didn't make it then, I wasn't going to make it in this business. I, along with 2 partners, created a thriving boutique brokerage that withstood everything The Great Recession threw at us! 

So, YES, it's a challenge to set your roots in a bear market but, well worth it in the long run!

It's called doing all the basics consistently! Oh wait....that couldn't be real estate biz, could it!!!

I believe Real Estate schools primary responsibility is to teach how to operate within the laws of their state, greater emphasis could be on good business practices and ethics imho. how to survive market conditions should be part of the interview process with prospective Brokers. 

I don't know how Utah works, but in Florida, I don't get to choose what is taught in the prelicensing class.  The state decides that.  I assume in Utah it's the same.  The prelicensing instructor decides the way it is taught, but not what is taught.  The instructor doesn't get to decide that we are going to talk about recessions, or sales training, or whatever.

The more information they can get the better.

I went into Property Management, as a supplement to my listings and sales, just before the recession hit. I secured 50 rental units, and that kept me busy and the money coming in.

Yes, to this and more. Real Estate is like a wagon wheel. The hub is central control (subject), and the spokes go out from there. Everything is connected. A well-rounded person fares better than a tunnel-vision expert. This reminds me of parents who didn't teach their children manners. It is necessary and vital to everything yet takes a backseat at times. Learn all!

According to the powers that be in DC, we are not in a recession. That said, little doubt the economy is receding! New dressing on the word salad! As for students surviving a recession, I agree with Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist. 

Surviving and thriving is more of an internal action than one dependent on any type of economy.

My career began as the market took a huge dive, Bob. Everyone thought I was crazy to do that! I took every class and seminar possible to learn how to survive when short sales and foreclosures were the norm...so far, so good!

I would warn anyone entering our field that things are going to go from bad to worse and to survive they must be will to invest a minimum of 80 hours a week and be willing to work 7 days a week and on holiday.  They need to know the survival rate too.

The instructor might "instruct" his students to ask for help with this question of seasoned professionals on AR.
