I usually find that a shovel blade does the job, and yes I would get that snake and any others out of my lumber pile, better to get rid of the snake than have one of my workers injured or killed.

No copper heads up here so far, but with global warming it is only a matter of time.

The only snakes that I see around my house are small garden variety, non-lethal, non-poisonous, bug eating garter snakes. They are of values and not to be feared or harmed.

Close to home is a game changer. It is just not allowed. In their defense, they do a good job of keeping the balance in Nature on their little levels. We have snakes but I have not seen but one and he was a little one trying to take cover. The rattlers challenge us to either live and let live or kill & move on. I evaluate at the time

We have snakes in our area.  Rattlers are the worst.  Can't go shooting them here sadly.  Would have to call the fire department to come and wrangle them.

I see only small lizards all around where I live. Some frogs too likely from the canal behind my condo. While I am not into killing things, a copperhead may not survive near me.  Saturday morning I realized that killing ants is okay too.

Yep, I regularly encounter Rattle Snakes hiking and golfing and we have several species some non-venomous around our home. San Diego is a coastal desert, so we definitely have snakes.

We have snakes, the most dangerous being Rattlesnakes.  I've only seen about a dozen of them since moving here in 1980.  There's horse country just about ten miles away.  My friends daughter just go bitten by a non-poisonous snake in the chicken coup.

We rarely see any of the more dangerous snakes around the house but my favorite golf course has shared a number of pygmy rattlers and once a sizeable Eastern Diamondback refused to share its tee box. Some times you are obliged to let them play through without question. It was beautiful to watch as it relaxed gathering Vitamin D and warming up for the day. At least two club lengths long and I am guessing close to 30lbs. by its girth so impressive and our presence did not move it an inch.

“Copperhead bites can cause serious local reaction, which can result in pain and debility in the affected limb. There is a range of severity, from dry bite, mild, moderate to severe. Antivenom treatment can speed recovery and reduce need for opiate pain medications. “The decision on whether to use antivenom is complex and depends on the severity of the bite, which is assessed by initial presentation, systemic symptoms and progression of swelling over time. Treatment usually consists of an initial dose of four to six vials, and then additional vials may be needed if the swelling spreads or systemic signs worsen. Your doctor may mark the edge of the swelling with a skin marker and re-assess periodically to observe for progression. “Antivenom is not always required to treat a copperhead bite, but it is important to be evaluated by a physician with expertise in treating venomous snakebites in order to make that determination.”

We have mostly black racers, they are quite nosy but usually try to get away as quickly as they can. We don't have copperheads in our area but I did encounter a diamond back rattle snake on our front porch once. You've never seen anyone shut a door as quick as I did. Curiosity made me go around the house and watch it from a safe distance. Apparently, it had recently shed, it was in no particular hurry and meandered away but not before I didn't get a few photos. If not, I would have had to call someone to relocate.

Yes, I would kill a snake in my yard. Living in Florida, you had to be careful. Now, living in a downtown hirise inChicago, we have other security concerns.

I scream at the harmless small ones so I'd be moving if there was a 3 ft any-kind-of-snake near my home.  NO WAY...!  I respect their role in nature but no thank you...! I've heard there are plenty of other varieties in the Adirondacks -- one of many reasons that I'm not a hiker.

We do have some snakes in our area, but have only found non-venomous in our yard and it has been some time.  I pick them up with a stick and relocate them.  Sometimes, I think it was a mistake because they do keep the vermin population down.

We do have copperheads in NC. I've only seen a few and they were in their own habitat. A few weeks ago I'm pretty certain I saw a black snake in the bushes in front of my porch. I think my husband scared it away. I've never seen as many snakes here as I did in Florida. One July 4th we had 8 black racer snakes climbing the juniper trees in front of my parents house. One of our neighbors was a firefighter so anytime we saw snakes at my parents house he would come down, catch them and take them to the meadow.

Oh, and to answer your question, yes, if removal to a better place wasn't an option the I would kill a snake. I hope I'm never than close and in that situation.

We have a variety of snakes in the area, like king, garter and milk snakes that are beneficial in keeping the mice and gopher populations down and leave them alone. We have yet to come across a venomous one at home, though there are rattlesnakes native to the area.

Yes, we have all kinds, Black, Garter, Copperheads, Rattlesnakes, Water snakes, Corn snakes, Racers, Milk snakes, Eastern Fox snake, Worm snake,  etc. I don't kill them unless they are aggressive. Usually just give them space, and they'll move along. We sometimes find black/rat snakes and garter snakes in our garage and basement. I just set them back outside.

Of COURSE we do, it's the desert - HOWEVER in the 'burbs' where I live there's no food for snakes so they tend to stay more out in the wilderness where they can catch rodents, etc . . . in coming up on 30 years here I have seen a snake only 2 times - one was a lil baby garden snake when we lived where there were evergreens and raw land nearby - the second was a big boy right outside KOHL'S at a shopping center that abuts a wildlife preserve - Animal Control got him and sent him home . . .
My folks' old house in SoCA (Corona) had orange groves for miles west (just on the other side of Capistrano, now it's all McMansions) and so they got critters a lot. One time my mom was screaming at the top of her lungs, a snake was in the garage pantry! LOL it was a garden snake but the 'how the hell'd you get there factor', LOL

Hi Fred- we are in snake season here in Texas and like Indiana Jones...I hate snakes.  My neighbor across the street was visited by a copperhead just last week.   We've seen them near or on the path where we walk as well. Should you hear an obnoxiously loud scream from my area, you'll know that I came upon a snake.

Yes Fred we live in a desert and right underneath the hills of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. We don't see a lot of snakes in the yard per se but we know they could show up anytime.  I've seen many a snake while out hiking in the Preserve.  Hikers  warn other hikers when a snake is seen and take precautions (rocks in hands typically).  Nothing bad has happened to us in 30+ years hiking here.  But it could and there are regular classes given by a local ER doc at the hiking visitor center. I highly recommend them to newcomers.
