I have stayed at Hyatts over the past year, they still offer breakfast, but on multi day stays they have cut the house keeping to upon request only.

Not really - if they offer breakfast, I may grab something; if not, I don't go out to eat for breakfast. Coffee is typically my breakfast when I'm traveling!

Having to travel for busieness is a thing of the past. Location and cost trump the free breakfast concept in my travels.

Yes, that actually would impact where I choose to stay.  Not always, but we chose a place in Ottawa because of many factors, one of which was the exquisite bread basket they delivered free if you booked direct ($15-$20 value per day... and VERY WELL worth it!).

I've chosen hotels with breakfast on many occassions when traveling for business... that was usually a key factor for me.  Hyatts were a mainstay of my Riverside business travel because of that.  It let my per-diem the company was providing go further.

I have never made a decision about where to stay based on a free meal. Yes, it's nice to have but other issues (reputation, location and convenience, cost) tend to be more important. Not too much traveling these days.

I don't do business travel any more for all intents and purposes. Never selected any hotel on the basis of a free breakfast in any event.

It seems that people prefer staying at short-term rentals these days instead of hotels.

All of the Holiday Inn Expresses I stayed in during my recent road trip offered a decent hot breakfast.  The Marriotts were just some danish and fruit.  I don't choose them JUST for the breakfast but that is one reason I choose them over some of the other comparable choices.

The cost of hotels has gone up significantly and I think they are using COVID as an excuse to cut back on services.

Due to covid no 'open' food is allowed. I usually take a pass on the bar breakfast. They don't even have fruit anymore.

Free breakfast was never "free". It was included in the cost to the room...same as clean towels. It is a convenient amenity. However, I don't plan my travel based on whether I have breakfast included or not.

If I had a choice of two hotels, everything was the same except one included free breakfast and one didn't, I'd choose the one with breakfast. Even if I just grab a banana on the way to go, it's helpful to not have to go find a diner.

Not at all. Being convenient to good coffee will. I primarily travel for business and I always check to make sure my room isn't near the noisy side of town and that there is good coffee nearby. If I'm visiting my kids I stay with them. One of these days my husband & I will stop working so much and perhaps take a vacation. When that happens, I will make sure we have access to decent food as he gets hangry if he doesn't eat. lol!

Edited to add that I do like it when they give me free water bottles.

Free is not ususally quality but as you say convenient. Why not carry a trail mix or a banana to hold you over until either a quality or a brunch appears?

Fred, my choice is usually Marriott, so never have had free breakfast, would rather have a comfy bed, and a clean room.

On my recent vacation I had breakfast included with both the Marriott and Best Western.  But housekeeping was by request only.  I am okay with making my own bed and hanging up my towels as long as I have something to eat each day.

Won't bother me a bit.  I generally want breakfast on the road if I'm traveling or out if I'm staying somewhere.  Was never impressed with the "free" breakfast.

I generally travel with my own coffee pot too

No, I never picked a hotel  for the hotel free food. I prefer better quality food. I have no business travel that involves hotels, so my hotel required travel is for fun these days. And, we won't travel afar until masks are not required on airlines, I haven't flown since Feb 2020.

By the way Marriott did offer a free brecky that was actually one of the only paletable ones offered in chains.

The small inns still serve informal breakfast here in Carmel-by-the-Sea.  And that usually includes fruit & juices and possibly something warm plus bakery items.  But when I stay at a hotel, I just need coffee available somewhere, whether I have to pay for it or not.  Like a great Latte. I certainly would not choose my hotel based on breakfast.

Both have free WiFi for planning my day.

No, that is not a deciding factor for me Fred. More important is the cleanliness of the rooms, overall spaces within the hotel and exceptional customer service.
