It seems likely that you have to make sure you have TRS on the mic side and TRRS on the lightning adapter (phone) side. Besides getting the correct ends figured out, you may have to get a TRS-TRRS cable, or an adapter to make the switch to your standard TRS mic cable.

I read this on one of the Apple discussion groups. " One note though... PLEASE make sure that your mic input is a TRS cable and NOT A TRRS. I am clueless but the AR techies seem to have you covered.

I had one years ago when they first took out the mic port from the iphone that fit some older headphones I used, but now I use air pods and that works for both the mic and hearing so I no longer use the old style headphones.
