And the GFCI  outlets offer a totally different kind of protection, like a super quick breaker.

I have no clue! So, I will err on better safe than sorry.

Hmm, I was told long ago to plug my laptop directly into the outlet without a surge protector but maybe I am wrong in doing so?  I will have to check back on this thread since I need to know if all electronic devices should be plugged into a surge protector.  Also, some are affordable, but some are really high in price, what do we even need?  I am lost when it comes to this kind of stuff, haha.

That's a great question and I don't know the answer, but regardless of what they have at the meter, I'm keeping mine because we've learned that 'smart meters' are often 'not so smart meters'!

I think you should cover all bases so have one on the box & also one on your big ticket items like computer, TV, etc.

We still plug into power strips as a pre-caution.

Like you and Ken, I believe in redundancy.  I'd still use the surge protector for my electronics.  That and six outlets through the protector are better than two in the wall.
