Helping your Montana dreams take root

We couldn't believe the cost of having a mover move our belongs from NY to MT, so my husband and I loaded up a U-haul and he and my stepson brought the goods to MT and put in storage.

He flew back, and then we drove the few remaining things across country separately.

It was MUCH cheaper to do that than to pay for a moving company. And nothing got damaged. Which actually surprised me. But it was all fine!

 Tell me about it, Richie!

We have almost finished moving from Tallahassee, Florida to Sunset, South Carolina.  We left a lot of furniture and personal possessions behind; it was not worth the cost to take it.  We still have to go back and pick up our Honda Odyssey van, which is parked at my brother-in-law's house.

Total cost included storage rooms in Tallahassee (we "staged" the house we sold, that included getting the excess stuff out of the house).  A hefty charge for two large storage rooms.  Then the cost of two Penske trucks, men to load it onto trucks in Florida, the money we paid the drivers, then the cost to unload it in South Carolina..  And, we took most of it to another storage place in Anderson, South Carolina (their prices were less than half what we paid in Florida).  We gave even more of the furniture and stuff away before bringing the rest of it to our new home.

Not just the money, but the time involved, including change of addresses, utility company, phone company, driver license, vehicle registration, property tax assessor, and more.

I have given that same advice many times, most have to learn the hard way and pay a premium to move used furniture and junk across the country.

One buyer that re recently helped find a home in Wisconsin left all of her furniture in Arizona and and had an enjoyble trip back to Wisconsin to enjoy a new home filled with new furniture.

It is insanely expensive to move and with the Pandemic and so many people leaving California ... the costs continue to increase.

Our move from Boston to Cali in 2005 was a huge expense. Several moves were with corporate relo so we did not bear the cost...it was great! Have done DIY several times - tough on the body but easier on the wallet.

You are correct. And, it is also expensive to move all of the stuff that we will never use.

And should you be unfortunate to use All My Sons out of Ft.Myers Florida I can provide a helpful hint. Do not! Dial 1-800 JUNK and start over where you land. It is cheaper and less frustrating to not have to pay twice. Once for what you thought you were moving and once more to remove the junk you receive from your new home.

We have a lot of people who relocate to NC. I've had several people tell me they sell everything. It gets a little more complicated when you have kids.

Are you moving?  I have heard that it is indeed very expensive.  A friend of mine that was moving from Arizona to New York decided to just buy new furnishings rather than have hers moved.  She also shipped things via FedEx, UPS or USPS rather than rent a moving truck.

It is crazy to move a household. We moved 3 provinces and it was over $10K 10 years ago and we did all the packing ourselves. Thank goodness the move was for this job, I was able to write most of it off.

When I moved my elderly SIL from Arizona to Washington a couple of years ago, it was cheaper to fly my son and his wife to Arizona and rent a U-Haul for them to drive back here. We had church members load and unload belongings at each end.  It cost around $2,000 in total.

I've been in denial Richie! I've contemplated a big move and checked into it and quickly decided that most of my belongings is just "stuff". The cost of moving this stuff would by far exceed its value. There are a few sentimental pieces that I wouldn't part with but I could probably transport those myself.

When I moved from Europe to the US, I just brought a couple of suitcases. I had sold all my furniture, cleaned out my closet and stored a few boxes in my parents attic (where they still sit 🙄 18 years later).

Be aware, the 'estimate' most movers provide is meaningless.
In every case the real bill to the owner comes due when the truck is weighted before arriving at the destination. Then the real bill, due on arrival, must be paid before the truck is unloaded.
Have you EVER  encounterd a mover who would GAURANTEE the 'due on arrival' bill be with 15% of the estimate?
These guys are highway robbers.
Soluton:
1. Rent a pod
2. buy 2 dozen cargo straps at Harbor Freight and 35 furniture pads
3. Contact the local UPS store or local mover to hire bodies to pack the pod.
4. Clean and paint the new place while it still empty. No time pressures at all.
Thank your insightful real estate professional.

Ching ching expensive to move it across country pound for pound. I tell west coast buyers or those heading up from Florida to sell those harvest gold appliances. We have lots of the same models and kinds included in the sale or bought dirt cheap up here in rural Maine Richie Alan Naggar . Travel light and just bring the sentimental antiques along for the move.

Yes a few years ago my father moved only 1/3 of the way & it was around $10K. Totally flabergasting.

Other friends went directly to shippers where the put the trailer in front of your house, you load it & then off they go with it. That worked out great for them.
