If they are really great at their job . . . I don't sweat it and I am one who hates smelling smoke . . .but I'll pick up after them if need be. Same with the radio  . . . I just close my doors.
Yeap, they can decide if they want the job or not.

No smoking is a good one Fred Griffin Tallahassee Real Estate and I have never thought about that.

Looks like your contractor is not going to accept the job.

I think it's fine for you to add whatever clauses you want to when hiring someone.  I also think it is fine for him to decline to accept the business under those terms.

I'm sure that you can find a contractor that accepts your terms.  He will probably also find work from someone who does not require those terms.

As the customer, it is best to find a good match to work with on jobs, especially jobs that will take a long time to finish.  As a long time contractor, I can tell you that little things like being able to play music at a reasonable lever does wonders for worker morale.  And donuts!  Donuts are always a welcome bonus.  😃

You're the master of your own contract, but what's the plan if your contractor violates a clause mid-construction?    Are the clauses intended as a psychological deterrent or do they have teeth?

The no smoking is a good one, but not one that has impacted anyone I've hired.  The no music one is not one I'm fond of particulrly.  I don't have a problem with them listening to music as they work, some of it is even pretty good.

I think it's up to any home owner to make whatever rules they wish regarding contractors. It's also up to any contractor to take or not take a job.

I wouldn't mind contractors at my home using music/radio. I would only mind the cigarettes if someone tried to light up inside the house. Outside is fine.  Although I might bring something outside they could use as an ashtray.

If those are the rules known upfront. . .those are the rules that must be followed or it's onto another job.

I do not have an issue with music as long as it is not blaring.

I take issue with smoking and the fact that I have yet to see someone take the butts with them. Most don't clean up the construction mess.

All extras end up coming with a cost.

We see govt RFPs that have all sorts of goofy things in them, and the govt generally pays at least triple for most projects since most will not work with them and the contractors that will work with them have all sorts of headaches built into the bid.

Depends on if the house is occupied or not.  Occupied, no music etc and no smolking for sure.  Vacant, music is fine, but no smoking in the property.

Smoke when you take a break. Listen to music on break or at lunch. When working, work! No cellphones or distractions! Also, demand pictures before, during and after whihc puts everything to rest. Be flexible and remember the rule: Contracts are only as good as the people behind them. Keep in mind too that simple tradesman have their way of producing results let them while they are there. Concentrate on mission accomplished

It means arrival.

Not arrival into the Twilight Zone but the land of the entitled, elitist and exclusionist.
Every south of the border crew I witnessed building and maintaining America were hard workers, timely, courteous and impecable in policing their workspace.
I would not begrudge these workers doing thankless and extremely difficult work a little music.
I'm surprised anyone would want to work for someone embracing such pettiness. It is a shame so many are so easily deminished.

AMEN to both. I forgot where I was once where the carpet layers or the painters were blasting non-english music for hours during the day. It was very annoying & I didn't want to seem like I was being prejudice.

I have seen clauses similar used in exclusive golf course communities in Florida. They were pretty effective but sometimes hard to enforce. It worked where I was working because of the general contractors.

I like it!  Shows that you're a good neighbor too especially with the number of people working from home...  Their music choice might be awesome but I don't need to hear it while trying to work.

It could be a lot worse Fred.

attempts to set up devices to record inside,

take up a room in the house with their tools,

insist on bringing GF and 6 yr old because can't afford sitter, and his "Section 8 rental doesn't allow GF to sit kid at the house."

throw hissy fits publicly and privately

chew and spit in the driveway.

All turned out to be organized cyber stalkers instructed scene by scene by texts and calls from paid handlers. Anyone not familiar with organized cyber stalking is welcome to check out and join my LinkedIn group, Friends of William Binney and Karen Melton Stewart, or search targeted individuals.

Hissy fitter #1 threw 3 fits demanding to be paid gas money:  publicly at Home Depot, privately in kitchen, on driveway for the neighbors. His GF's email with f word 15xs claimed her hissy fitter ran out of gas on the road.

Hissy fitter #2 also participated in harassment scenes in yard and Home Depot, where my gift card was discovered stolen. Store manager replaced card within 24 business hours.  I dealt with him directly. He emailed he could not identify non-employee harassers poking cells in my direction as cashier and asst mgr insisted they couldn't do anything.

Cyberstalkers in your home - goals are the same if history is best predictor of future performance.  One goal of several: attempt to incite target to act out so complaint can be filed, police called and eventually declare target unstable and commit them.  Then "legal" docs strangely emerge granting property ownership to persons unknown to owner. Historically (20 yrs) this is mainly perpetrated on single women.  You get the scam.

These stalkers must have been so disappointed.  The only scene they could create was their own bad behavior destroying their contractor reputation.  They gave themselves away.  Hissy fitter #2 very carefully questioned if I would recognize the perp who stole the gift card.  "Yes, easily recognize him," and you as accessory.  The same hissy fitter told me he could "read minds and knew what I really thought."   I can write a book about dumb psychopathic cyber stalkers!  Lesson learned:  fire their asses a lot sooner.

Smoking on the job? Municipality would get after them. What about their insurance?  Music? The neighbors would call them in. No loss with that vendor, they are a big risk to you and your reputation I would think.

When someone works on my house, I only want them to be happy so they do a perfect job and don't intentionally screw something up.

Decades ago, I owned a home service business where there were usually workers around so I saw some unsavory things that were done to picky owners...

Like concrete being flushed down the toilet and fiberglass rubbed inside a ladies bra that was on the bed.

I speak with workers to see if they need anything and we always pay the day they are finished...
