Most people need to be where their jobs are.

Sure, many are out of work now but I don't see the wisdom in moving somewhere else where the business in which your skills are needed are also shut down.

Yes, I do. Having moved from NYC to Charlotte 21 years ago where I lived in a coop to a single family home, every day I'm thankful I'm living in a single family home in a much less congested area. How many buyers might do this... that's a whole other question and I have no clue.

I think that's a valid question. I don't see that happening here in the Raleigh area. I have wondered if that might happen in NYC.

It certainly could. We have been flooded here in NH with people from NY, Ct and MA who fled the infected areas for NH. We are afraid they are bringing it with them. The governor just shut down hotels and all short term rentals yesterday. Hopfully not too late. Before this, we had already seen a large amount of relocation buyers from the cities looking to get out

Current situation is a little broad.

I am thinking that many people will leave IL because of the outrageous taxes & our idiot governor. This just multiplies the problems we already have.

People have been leaving the city (Chicago) for ages now. Surprised it's got anyone left.

Now that individuals AND companies have first had experience of operating without a physical location, a new business model may be much more attractive. It is not so much FLEEING the city because everybody is infected but the dream of country living with a city income and no commute. it may prove the inspiration behind decentralizing.

In general no for the long term, and it hasn't with other pandemics.

But, short-term here in NY, especially among higher end customers, more will move to suburbs like both of our counties, just like they did after 9/11.  This may happen for next 2-3 years (IMO) and then get back to steadier flow where people may be in City when younger and trade up to house when they start a family and want more room and better schools like it's always been.

The speed increasing to leave cities, head to the hills and hunker down or retire in small rural areas is what I am seeing. It was always the plan for many to leave population centers. The coronovirus just gave it a jump start to boost the momentum. Lower cost of living helps make the decision on where to bail out to and relocate. No debt, no crime, more space helps the where to pick. Make sure your community page is buffet loaded with information, images, videos, blog posts. What's not to like? My town has its own power utility, Internet company, dairy and is so self sufficient. High speed telecommute, bring your job and work remotely is so easy now. You are working remotely now from home, why not do the same in Maine the thinking our emails, phone calls are saying. My small Maine town invested in the right areas as everything turns cyber from malls to real estate showings using video.

You know, this type of trend has been happening on and off for many years.  I remember clearly when CA folks were folking to move to northern AZ way back in the early 90's.  We had a ton of relos that couldn't believe our prices and size of homes for the buck.  Same thing been going on for years....for many reasons. This could be another reason.

Not everyone is cut out for Green Acres, and the commute time is likely a factor. Always have some with knee jerk reactions, such as when gas prices spike, move closer to town.

Absolutely worth considering...even the best Hollywood end of the world movies didn't prepare us for true reality. 10 acres, with water, a garden, some animals looks good however city people will need time to adjust.

Possibly.  One of our neighbors is an estate manager for a family who owns several ranches as well as two homes on the beach.  The family and friends  are all here at the present moment and flew in from different parts of the US.

95% of the world lives on 10% of its land . . . random trivia for today!

I think it has been happening for a while . . . I know of quite a few friends and clients who ran screaming from CA . . . as we did after the LA Riots in 1992!

Not just suburbs . . . we talk to folks all the time who want to be in very rural areas . . . no more zero lot lines.
