Well . . . we've always needed to pay for a newspaper . . . the digital subscription is SSDD.
I love how the guys are using 60 as a 'now I'm old' age . . . I don't know any 60s folks who can't get there . . .
For those scouring for 'public notices' like trustee's sales etc . . . it's probably easily findable with a Google (or in this case Bing) search.

(in my county there is one law firm that handles virtually everything - it's there and free)

I think that the newspapers are shooting themselves in the foot. Our Economic Development Journal is everywhere and they run on AD dollars.

I think it is to save money & no one reads the paper anymore BUT .... I do not believe that it gives relief from the statute that the foreclosure (whatever) must be publicized in advance.

Hmm...unintended consequences?  Current examples aside I wonder if twitter or some similar communication would be received as brave new thinking in the 21st Century?  Pondering off-subject. Just for the helluva it.

Annette,

I agree with Candice A. Donofrio and there are print versions of several publications in town in kiosks and they are FREE.  A

This sounds like a letter versus spirit of the law issue.  Out here we have to post notices in a paper as well for a wide variety of items like a ficticious business name.  The city of Ojai is small and very secular.  Their paper, while still in our county, has a very small distribution but most of it is advertisements that are mandated.  Why?  Because a very small portion of the population gets it, as opposed to the main county paper.  This might be your city's equivalent.

Maybe they could also post them on their website somewhere?

I think it's most likely cheaper to post to the digital only version and the city is looking to cut costs.

In Tallahassee, a lot of notices are posted in the basement of the County Courthouse parking garage.  Nobody will ever see them.

It doesn't seem right to me. So was it the city's decision or the newspaper's decision? If it's the city's, then there are obviously trying to save some money. Either way, someone could look into what the laws are about Public Notices and see what it says.

Here in NH the legal notices still must be printed. However the auction advertisements have all but pulled out of the paper and are all digital. You are right that many over 60 wont see them

I suspect that many are going even cheaper these days and just posting on the city website, I appreciate this and know were to go if I am interested.

In my city, and probably most cities, if you have a public library card, you can access the newspaper online for free from any computer.

If you don't have a computer, the library has computers to use.

Good heavens ... I don't know.  Notices "should" be visible - we "should not" need to seek and go find them.

That policy would have to be voted on in our City Annette Lawrence , Palm Harbor, FL 727-420-4041 and hopefully it will never happen here.

Interesting but not sure if they can do that. But who am I. I would think they would have referred to City Council before doing such.

There are some parts of our paper that you have to pay for the digital version and some parts (like the public notice section) that is free for the world to see.

That same criteria will likely continue when they do away with the hard copy version of the paper.

Well, if something is only available to certain people, it's not really public information. On second thought, it's public if people want to pay for the information. Is that what the meaning of public notices is? I don't think so.
