Why people do/don't do things on/away from AR isn't important to me.  I have no control over such things.  Now, if I was king...I'd likely abdicate... Just thinking out loud.

Anonymous is probably one of the most abused features on AR. The original intent was to use it when you needed to post a Q that related to an active deal or any kind of highly confidential matter. Since then, it has devolved to what you see here lately and is rarely used as intended.

Mott Marvin Kornicki,

There is an excellent reason for anonymous questions from licensed agents. You have a fidudiary responsibility of confidentiality to your clients yet incredibly challenging circumstances have arisen in your transaction.  By posting anonymously on AR, you protect confidentiality while receiving highest and best advice from some of the best real estate minds in the industry.

AR is an excellent venue for obtaining professional opinion and guidance that may shed new light on issues you face without compromising your client.

I'm sure there are some good reasons to ask questions anonymously. However, I think is is probably overused as someone else suggested. I don't like answering those questions when it is anonymous.

I would think that they want to avoid feeling embarrassed if they think their question is dumb and people might think it's something they should already know. There Are No Dumb Questions and who cares if you're having a brain cramp and can't remember.

There are two reasons why one would ask anonymously and why the feature exists, per Bob Stewart.

  1. You are seeking advice with a deal and wish to keep things anonymous to protect the parties in the deal and in case the other agent is a member here.
  2. You need help with something happening at your brokerage (like you're thinking about leaving) but don't want anyone to know.

Anything else is a violation of the rules, per Bob.  It used to be that we would report the questions that violated these rules, but nothing has been done about them in quite some time and the powers that be don't find asking a question about land rights anonymously to be a problem.

Mott, you do ask a lot of questions and none of them anonymously.

I don't know what's up with Adam, but his question was not in need of a anonymous signature.

Some believe the 'nature' of the Internet is to remain anonymous, undisclosed, so there will be no accountability and obvious shame.
