I feel pretty good when technology and I can get along without much of a major upheaval in daily functioning.  A replacement strategy? Not really. Grin and bear it.  Maybe.

When my or either of my assistants' phone/computer/technology/equipment interfere with production, they are swiftly replaced.

I keep the replacement costs for all items in my budget each year. Whatever is not spent, is carried over to the next year's budget.

I will also add, I do NOT replace just because a new model is introduced either - there has to be a 'functional' (or lack thereof) reason!

I have enough computer back up to last me several life times Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS . As far as my phone I've never used it as a computer so it would not be much of a loss. Now that I've retired from RE I really don't even think the contact list would matter much.

Both my phone and my laptop are old - but I hesitate to replace them.  I will have to break down within the next year for both, but I know how they work and will hate to see them go.

I'm no longer excited about replacing my technology tools so I only do it as necessary. They are insanely expensive but you can't do without a properly functioning phone or computer.  We all get to the point where we bite the bullet and just do it.  This reminds me of a blog post I wrote several years ago. I'll have to go dig in the archives and find it.

When it stops working or it's slowed down to the point where it becomes a hinderance I'd replace it. I would not feel great about paying for a new iPhone either.

At some point in time the existing products will be incompatible with the new apps. At that point, 'others' have made the choice for me. And when that happens, when others make choices I should make, it never benefits me.

Get a really low cost consumer cellular. You'll still get your work done.

Paul,

We replace when it is time to do so.  Since we have Apple as our tech of choice, we appreciate that they have a trade in program.  I traded in my 7 year old desktop because it was running slow, and had developed a few idiosyncracies that stumped Apple.  The trade in value was good, and Apple will no doubt add new chips and donate it.  Same with iPhones.  So the price comes down, and makes it more affordable.  I am assuming that other companies are doing the same...it is a win win.  A

My groove is, I use up till I can use up no more BUT technology is rarely 'moody' and when it's getting ready to go, THAT'S when it's time to find the replacement. Give you time to move everything over gently and gracefully in the midst of 'everything else we have to do' in this crazy biz!

I also have multiple computers going on so as to have plenty of redundancies.

I STILL HAVE my FIRST real estate computer from 2001 and it WORKS. A buyer agent from 2003 needed an elevation cert and County didn't have it. BUT I DID. LOL right in my old Systemax. Now it's in my other computers too. (I worked at a different office back then or it would have been!)

We have an obligation to have backups for our backups. It's on my audit form every license/entity renewal.

Plus, I can always use the writeoffs.

I admit first thing, I am a tech junkie. My whole life is on my phone, so saving money on it is not part of the equation! I go no longer than 2 years without trading for a new one. I use my iPad Pro for most things others use a laptop for. I have a note app that I hand write all my customer notes in. All my notes are instantly synced to my phone, and back up to iCloud.
