Greetings from Blonde Universe! ♄
If you had placed brackets around the multiplication, the answer would be different.
Rene Descartes said "mathematics alone avoids sophsims". And he's turning his freaking grave over Common Core math!
Sorry Rene, my generation did not do it!
Oh, to your question. When we communicate energetically, words make both more and less sense.

I was taught that multiplication takes place before addition. Therefore, the answer is 17.

The answer is definitely not A. As to B or C, multiplication comes before addition/subtraction, therefore the brackets should be placed around 2x6 not 5+2. But then again, maybe I'm showing my age.

Oh come on. I can't believe that many of us don't know the actual answer and the mathematical rules. And only a few actually know the answer.
This is basic math 101. Multiplication overrides in the absence of brackets. Thus the answer is 17. There are no other possible answers.

This is not an expression of a fact. It is a math problem that is not presented clearly with multiple interpretations. Math is a fact. Math solutions are answers and not facts.

What's "real" to someone is "real" to them -thats how it is to them. Reality - the physical universe (which math is a symbolic representation of) is real to the degree that two or more folks agree that it's real....yep that's how it is, kind of thing. It is a sliding scale - the more disagreement there is on a subject the less real that something is and the less usable/applicable the subject matter is. Your math example was perfect - there is disagreement about the proper order of carrying out the functions and thus different answers and different realities all from very succesful intelligent folks.
Thus for us it is important to find out what is "real" to our clients and either work within that reality or change that reality with edumication...
It is very frustrating when we end up working with folks that have a reality that is too different from the commonly agreed upon reality (also referred to as "that guy is nuts").

Annette,
Math is a universal language. Regardless of which planet someone is from does not mean they have been educated. I cannot say that I have trouble communicating with people, even when I do not speak their language. A

Interesting. I read the question, and said, uh, DUH, it's C - 17. You do the multiplication first. Taught to me in the early 70s, pre-common core. Then I read the answers and was surprised to see the way I was taught was not necessarily the way others were taught. So even things I think are a given might not be. Agggghhhhh!

Always get confused with these so like the mnemoic posted will have to remember that, so my guess of C was right. But understand your point. Something I read and learnt in conversation with my wife, is that even when we speak the same language we don't always mean the same thing.
