First and most importantly, to make the decision "to be" a successful real estate agent.

Take on the "beingness" of a successful agent.

Adopt the "doingness" that successful agents do.

Keep improving Beingness and Doingness of a successful agent of which there are many many books, companies, mentors etc to help with the specifics or mechanics of those two steps.  For example, Gary Keller's Millianaire Real Esate Agent Book is good example of materials available that guide one through the Beingness and Doingness steps. And it is a great resource whether someone is with KW or not.

So keep on assuming the Beingness and Performing the Doingness and one will Have the Havingness of a Successful Real Estate Career.

1) time management skills- no one is pushing you but you.

2) people skills- talking is great, listening is better.

3) thick skin- it's rare, but you will occasionally spend a great deal of time with people who will want the impossible, and you will be to blame.

4) money management skills- your pattern may be feast or famine. Having enough in storage will come in handy.

5) marketing prowess- there are more agents than there are customers. Someone will win them over, often the best marketer wins.
