This is a question to which an answer would have no rhyme or reason as each transaction is so different for various different reasons. And I can't think of one single good reason to spend time going back to find the answer to this. What would one do with that answer?

This is not something that I track but, I can tell you that the last 10 of my folks either put 20-40% down or paid cash (100%). I haven't had an FHA buyer since early winter.

Averages have little meaning when talking about down payments. 

Many first time home buyers use FHA and VA or special local financing requiring very little cash. 

Without even looking it is 3.5%. AND that would mean the majority of buyers use FHA to purchase. I sell lots of investment properties too, and those are all cash and a league of their own. 100% down on those.

I worked with predominantly cash buyers for my last 10 transactions which was a first!

And the significance of this question?

The average down payments are sort of irrelevant. The bad part is that too many people are under the mistaken belief that they need far more money to buy a house than they do. While it varies from one individual to another it is quite possible for some home buyers to buy a home in my market in Northern Virginia and sometimes they need LESS to buy a house than they would to rent one!

Many buyers are in the position to put down sizable down payments these are usually those moving from one home they own to a new home and using the equity from the sale. I will say that in the past year I have had a number of home buyers that were able to buy with less than a few thousand dollars out of their own pockets. The Confusion over how much buyers need to put down keeps many people renting when they don't have to Rent Trap

we're usually listing agents.....but when the team members work with buyers, every deal is different so it's impossible to remember who paid what for a down payment....

It depends on the marketplace, and we would not track this stat....A

Have seen 25% cash, and most of my buyers have been 20% or more.

Zero.  All my buyer transactions are cash.
