The average down payments are sort of irrelevant. The bad part is that too many people are under the mistaken belief that they need far more money to buy a house than they do. While it varies from one individual to another it is quite possible for some home buyers to buy a home in my market in Northern Virginia and sometimes they need LESS to buy a house than they would to rent one!
Many buyers are in the position to put down sizable down payments these are usually those moving from one home they own to a new home and using the equity from the sale. I will say that in the past year I have had a number of home buyers that were able to buy with less than a few thousand dollars out of their own pockets. The Confusion over how much buyers need to put down keeps many people renting when they don't have to Rent Trap
