Largest or biggest? I had visions of some 300 pound philanthropist and Bill Gates is anything but that. And by the way, he's a philanthropist only because of Melinda... she's the one who got him to contribute... before he married her he did very little if anything.

As of 2017, the Gates Foundation had contributed over 50 Billion to various charitable causes.  One of their more recent local pledges was 1.65 Million toward Affordable Housing and early education for children in the Seattle area.

In my world the largest philantropist are those that dedicate their lives - their existence toward the welfare and betterment of mankind - the Gandi's and Mother Theresea type folks. Those and couple of others that are also deceased and to keep the consversation secular are the largest philanthropist to me. They created the most good for mankind as a whole. It is an interesting question for me. Who is doing the most for the betterment of mankind today? While the donations of large sums of cash by the Gates Foundation and other such folks has a certain benefit on a certain scale. Not everything all that energy (cash) from these huge financial powerhouses is necessarily to the benefit of mankind in my opinion. It's not gong to improve the lot of existence on this planet and actually much of the organizations that receive these huge financial donations actually promote the status quo and may not really be "helping" the lot of man as a whole on a long term basis all that much.

I'm going to find out who I think is the largest current and living philanthropist today. Perhaps I should help him or her.
