They promise to get you to page one for what terms? 

You see, they talk a good game but do they deliver? 

I run when they say they can promise to get you to page one. 

No one can promise or guarantee that and if they are promising - they are not being truthful. 

I would also never again hire someone cold. All my hires are through referreals.

With Zillow being #1 on page one for short tail keywords, there is no way we go after short tail. Go after the long tail keywords.

That's one thing that changes so often, it's difficult to keep up with it on your own, Julie. It's good to hire someone but, finding the perfect vendor can be a challenge. 

No need to hire on a random solicitation for that, we have many great computer professionals here on ActiveRain. They have provided great service with the needs that I've had.

I find it funny... (peculiar funny, not "ha-ha" funny), when they call and say "We found you on Google, and we'd like to help you with your SEO (for a large fee)".

My 2 cents on SEO:

platforms alone can't get you on page 1. HOWEVER, the tools platforms give you are very very important to your potential SEO. 

Landing on page 1 of Google is certainly possible with the right website provider and a little determenation/strategy on your end. You must utilize the tools they give you.

• Make sure your pages are indexabe (indexable pages for listings is HUGE). 
• Create unique content (for example, blogs) on your domain
• Backlinks (but only in honest, real dialougues.. don't spam comment sections)
• Keywords/metadata
• domains/urls
• consider a niche

With all of this, you can land on page one yourself, without an SEO consultant.... but of course, lots of time and learning is involved, so maybe hiring a consultant to handle it for you is the best option. 

(depending on the town/city you're in. obviously is is easier to rank in Laredo, TX versus Chicago)

Do what the RTZ can not. You are live, local, the native in the community. You can do way more than quote the US census figures. Seed, feed, water and cultivate the local blog posts that are helpful. time and money saving. Show them around your local area online. Shoot the local imagery, video, show the online real estate buyer or seller where you are, what it is like there, what you love about these parts. Make the UX beyond just real estate listings and be the person that the large portals are only cyborgs trying to appear like they live in your hometown. You know more about your local area than a west coast portal. Your listing presentations should be above and beyond what RTZ does with the images, copy you and I send them to bully us.

I try to boost my website through blogging and posting my web pages on social media. Page one use to be doable, I am happy with page two. In searches, I skip page one a lot. 

Yep I get tons of them. I know people who have hired SEO consultants, with mixed, and expensive, results. Perhaps someone here has a recommendation for us? It's a tricky path to follow and find the right person, and you may do better on your own, and using other methods to drum up business.

OMG - I could write a book on that.  Tens of thousands of dollars down the drain.  Even recommended people (not random) turned out not to be at the skill level I believed they were. 

I am doing it myself now.  

SEO is important. I would choose someone carefully.

I too get solicitation calls many times weekly but have not hired anyone. 

It is quite costly. I use offshore programmer and fees are more reasonable. He developed a rental website for me for about 25-30% what it costs.

He charges $300+ a month, needing about 4-5 months to see results but never on 1st page. Backlinks,  credible sources etc. Zillow, Realtor, Redfin, Homes are the ones dominate the market. The frustration is Google contantly change its ranking rules. AR will not get you anywhere. G+ was the only vehicle to get 3 blogs under your name.  Now they abolish G+....

I think Adword is the only way your name will quickly show up but it is costly.....

Pass. Get those calls and emails daily.

Getting to page one can be done. Staying there is the ongoing challenge

These places are just fishing. They throw the bait out and hope for bites. I suggest, do not bite on cold calls until you're able to check them out 

Here's an easy way to know if they are any good:

Ask them to give examples of a few of their real estate customers and what they rank for. Then, go and double check if the rankings are true. Do it in incognito mode.

Once you verified the rankings, call the agents/brokers and ask them if the company in question is the actual SEO for them, and if they are happy with them.

No & there are plenty of posts to explain why it's not a good idea. Keep your wallet closed on this one. You'd be better off following some good SEO experts here.

Once people have your credit card #’s it can be tough to get to stop dinging it !

No, I haven't hired anyone and especially not someone who randomly calls me. Usually, I ask them how they found me.

They most likely lost their money and still sit in the back of the pack on Google. I get 2-3 of these  calls a day every day. OUCH

I get those requests all the time... through emails and phone calls.  I always ask them this question:  If you are calling other agents in my area how can you get me on page 1 if you are promising them the same ething?

Most of these seem to be selling the ads that show above the results.  Anyone (including you) can get you to the #1 spot in the results for "how do I sell my 4 bedroom dupont circle home with 16 cypress trees and a dead cat in the yard?"  But what's your likely search volume going to be for that?  1?  If that!

At one point while blogging about "What's my <city> home worth?" I actually ended up owning almost the entire first page, including spots 1-6.  I got one call in 3 years from it.

At one point, I was even #1 and #3 for a short-tail address search, in other words when you searched 123 Main st.  I had the first, third and I think 5th and 8th postions.  Guess how much traffic I got?  Zero!  Sad, but true.  They saw my sign in the yard and didn't google, just went to zillow or called their agent.

I have to say, they all say that but promises promises, doubt that it happens.

Anyone can get on Page one of google depending on the search terms and also on what posting you are using. I can get many long tail keywords on the first several pages of google at the same time.. but that is not all there is to having that translate into getting leads or the phone ringing. Julie A.
