We had a duplex for about 12 years and sold it earlier this year. I would recommend multi-family units as the upkeep on them is less than having 2 - 4 roofs, yards, etc to keep up with if you have SFRs. It is also nice that if one unit is vacant, you still have someone making the payment (or part of the payment).
