I do both.  When I am traveling I hook into local hotspots whenever possible... unless I am working on something security sensitive.  I also have a mobile hotspot through my cell phone provider so I can have a secure connection to the internet with my laptop... which is very convenient for writing blog posts, etc.  Mine is called MiFi through Verizon.

BTW: I also find this a lifesaver when my internet goes out at home, which does happen when we have a power outage.

My phone has it built in, but I try and travel light so I do most my work from the phone when possible.  I don't bring a laptop but I do bring a smaller tablet... mainly for watching movies on the plane, but it can do zipforms and the such if needed.

Peter, we have a mobile hotspot with  AT & Coffee.  It runs just under $23 per month as an addition to our phone bill.  We have used it many times on the road and even when our undependable Comcast internet is out at home.

Well worth the money!!!!

I enable hot spot on my phone. Sprint provides an 'on-demand' feature so the cost is not perpetual.

I had a brick and found it less functional and hugely more cumbersome than enabling the phone.
