Traffic Is Traffic, Regardless of the Link Attribute
A nofollow link from a reputable site is more valuable than a dofollow link from a low Domain Authority site. Search engines are more complex than you think.
Frequency/placement of nofollow links are factored into search engines’ overall page ranking calculations, especially when the host site is considered “authoritative.”
ActiveRain is a DoFollow blog, why do you think there is so much spam here trying to do guest posts using the AR blog? I even see gigs on seoclerks and fiverr. So to best answer your question, a no follow link can and will benefit the page being backlinked to because you are trying to maintain a natural profile. Final note: Keep it relevant as a backlink. Google does know if for example you are a spam blogger posting on ActiveRain and it is not real estate related.

You may see 100+ rel = nofollow in a typical AR blog post.
Many of these are internal links such as "Like" "Report" "Delete". The rel = no follow is directing search engines not to pay any attention to those links.
To see how many "no follows" are in your post or page, or if you are concerned that a link to your website or page is no follow,
Right click > View Page Source
Control F > type in nofollow
Peter Mark or Tammy Emineth or Katerina Gasset may be able to give you a comprehensive explanation of do follow vs. no follow

All links are considered "DoFollow" by default. Putting the "NoFollow" just means that Google is less likely to pass the authority of the site doing the linking to the site being linked to. Both are necessary for a healthy link profile. There is some anecdotal evidence that even nofollow links from sites like WikiPedia pass the "link juice."

The classic getting higher relevance on any search engine is to create links allowing for more interactions between your blog and other "credible sources". In fact, Alexa used to be the site looking for analytics some years ago. The rules constantly change. If you talk to those SEO gurus who want $80-100 an hour to enhance searchability, they emphasize backlinks and show you the amount of improvements.
As far as suggestions to get AR a better place finding you. I have not seen or heard any thing from the management vowed they will enhance searchability for almost 2 years. Google today does not even post more read blogs or even G+ does not display any blogs linmked anymore. Before it listed 3 blogs for each rainmaker. I searched several top rainmakers, ambassadors etc and found I can not find their blogs either.
As for the internal hits, friend or unfriend it lies with AR.

ActiveRain is a do follow link. I am not sure where you are discovering that it is isn't.
Fred Griffin shows you how to check your no follows in your source.
But even it AR was a no follow link- it would still be an authoritative and important link to have pointing to your website.
No follow links from authoritative sites are just as important as follow links.
Google is looking for 'natural' flow of links.
So it would look SUPER unatural for your link profile to be all follow links and zero no follow links. Unatural will be a red flag to Google's algorithm.
Because it is natural for anyone to have both kinds of links.
You can also see how fast a spammer jumped on this post to try to get a link :) hehehe:

Dave,
This is way beyond my knowledge or interest for that matter...Our concern with our clients is to make sure they have the strategy to be market leaders...bottom line mentality. Not our expertise...I am sure many know the answer. A
