     You and I live in "The Lightning Capital of the World".  I have seen computers, DVD players, microwave ovens, etc. destroyed because lightning hit a wire near the house.  Forget surge protectors-- that kind of amperage will melt them.

    For that reason, I unplug.

I close out what I was in & let it go into sleep mode; comes back up nice & quick. 

I like to completely shut down so that all the background stuff will shut down.

I'd be curious to see the breakdown based on home offices versus storefront locations.  I can see the later being more inclined to shut everything off while the former not.

I actually disable the sleep and hibernate modes on my laptops as I've found they interfere with my operation of the device (especially when closing the lid).

Even electronics need a nap

I just flip the laptop. It goes to nap mode. 

Now a days they snooze on their own. As long as they awaken, I'm okay

My new ones go to power sleep quickly and it really saves on battery life.
