If I was selling Old Spice, or lingerie, I would "market to genders".

I sell houses.  Both genders live there.

Can't say I've ever given this issue a whole lot of thought. I market to people not to genders.

Every ad i write i look to put things that will attract Mrs Buyer and parts that will attract Mr. Buyer. Looking in a gender neutral sense, my ads boast the features that those seek. Kitchen lovers, big bedroom, big closets, storage, ready to finish basement, big garage, landscaped lot etc no matter what gender

Definitely!  When you market products to men you often have images of masculinity and sex.  Think Wrangler Jeans, they've used Brett Farve (if memory serves) showing him chopping wood and throwing the ol' pigskin around with his family.  You don't get more masculine than football and being an outdoorsman... well back then.  His TV wife also lovingly looks at him and maybe even embraces him, there's the sex.  The sex is more prevalent in other commercials though for other products like Axe body spray.

Now think of most products sold to women, it's a different message.  More about the home and happy family.  Paper towel commercials are all about the mom cooking with her kids and easily cleaning up their mess... all while having a smile on her face and the kids laughing happily away.

Of course there is Vegas, whose commercials for both men and women involve debauchery and oddly womens commercials have the male strippers in it, but mens have gambling, drinking and hanging with the guys.  No strip clubs which seems like an odd double standard...

I don't market to gender, but I prefer to do business with decisive, hard nosed buyers...that translates to men.

Annette,

With the PC movement, there is no gender marketing here in CA.  We are not allowed to say "his and hers" bathroom or closet for one thing...and the list goes on. A

When and where is the line crossed between "marketing" to a specific gender and "discriminating" against the other? It might conflict with federal law concerning protected classes. After all, real estate is not gender specific.

I believe it is a real thing.  Just like pet friendly. Dog friendly.  I know so local agents that market to "gay" and/or "lesbian" prospects.

I remain neutral ... or focus on a niche. My focus is nice people no matter their aim.

It certainly is a real thing and we use it all the time - marketing our grande master bedroom closets or the amazing 4-car garage. We hit the points that will attract both sexes...or at least we should be doing so!

Are you asking about the original 2, the 30+ which are legally recognized, the 70+ known or the 120 and growing genders purported to exist? Within only the male & female group, YES, it's a real thing!

We refuse to go there. In California, we would need three of the same ad since now the State recognizes 'Undecided' as a gender.

But I do not participate in it, too many of the adds can be insulting and or condescending.

No problem clicking on your post. And I agree with every one of your points. I think that if it's applicable in a unique situation, then possibly useful, but overall there's no real reason to exclude even if by omission.
