I used some of them until my team was fully trained to do the same tasks all basically "in house" meaning I have full control. My virtual assistant team can do most of the tasks real estate agents and businessed need done. 

I used elance before. I hired a website designer. She said the site would take her x hours to do. So that is what I figured, I was shocked when I got a bill for x times 3 for the site. She took it upon herself to 'monitor' the site daily, which was never what I asked for. You have to be very clear in what you want done. Make them repeat it back to you. I then learned to design my own sites. 

99 designs is very good actually. We have 2 logo designers on our team but if we want another few creative brains to choose from, we do a 99 design request. 

We use Fiverr a lot. 

Again, as my vas are trained to do things, I would much rather change their lives by giving them steady jobs and income. My clients and I make a huge impact on the lives of many people in the Philippines. They have food to eat, clothes to wear, they can go to the doctor, to the hospital, they can buy regular appliances we take for granted, they can also hire household help and send their kids to good schools. I am so passionate about making such an impact. It is the ripple effect too. By giving work to one mother of 3, she not only will help herself and her children, she will help her mother, her brothers and sisters, her relatives, the list goes on and on. I have my tech va taking off of work tomorrow to bring his elderly mother who has a hard time walking to a special hospital in another area- he could not have done this without the high pay we pay him ( higher than what most virtual assistants there get paid).

Great list! I am familiar with a few of the sites. I am such a control freak, I haven't been able to bring myself to outsource. If I had a bigger office, I would.

I have used a few of the sites mentioned in the past however I was not pleased with the work / results and did not use any of it. I've learned the hard way ... the cost of higher education! 

We utilize Upwork all the time for smaller projects that do not require a full time employee.

I have heard very strong, and positive reviews during marketing webinars, etc. that I have been on. Strong vetting, and a very refined end-result you are seeking seem to be the two overall themes I have heard. Know EXACTLY what you want in the end, and then post it specific enough that it would be hard for anyone responding to mis-interpret what you are seeking. Good luck, hope it goes well!

Yes, I have used "upwork" for years... and if you take the time to properly publish the job requirements and do a good interview.. then I have found some excellent help.  BUT, I recommend to start small with a contractor, give them a small job, see how they do.. then give them a bigger job, etc... test and test before you fully commit.  But in the end there are some very good people in upwork, just need to spend the energy to find them.  Worth a shot depending on the job... but don't hesitate to stop the contract if things are not going well.... move on until you find the right fit.

Having a technical inclination and executed many complex projects I know success in this 'shared resources' venue is dependent on writing clear specifications. 80% of the actual work is in the specs with 20% needed for coding and testing. Most novices get it backwards.

Finally, the project overview must have a trigger word or phrase that is understood by those who know the technology. Those who do not pick up on the word are removed from the list because they will also miss the important words in the specification and have demonstrated a complete lack of curiosity, the first clue of intelligence.

Is it risk free? Of course not.

Do I put all my eggs in one basket? Of course not.
