I have a solution to identifying more legitimate websites. Subscribe to free ahrefs.com account. Check domain authority. Anything above a 30 is a website that is at least "trying" to be a destination website. Anything that is 30-40 DA that has "tons" of content is probably a data aggregator(taking content with permission from other websites) and you can see of the data they are accumulating matches your interests.
http://realtytimes.com/
http://realtybiznews.com/
Are two examples of sites that publish original content and aggregate other peoples.

Sorry this happened to you in Europe, John but, I totally agree with you - I have a difficult time finding ANY real news these days. And, sadly, other social media is posting and re-posting the bogus 'news' too!
As for links - I never click them unless I know the source - period!

I tend to avoid most of those sites. Breitbart is the only news source I follow anymore... and even that is checked very infrequently.

Does not sound like a good experience. I do agree that there is a lot of crap out there ... many scams. We cannot be too cautious.

Legitimate news resources are far and few. There are plenty of news sources that are fronts for other purposes including some real estate "news" sites.

Most of it is crap and looking to take your money. That is my blunt assessment.

Believe very little of what you hear and a similar amount of what you see. Truth is elusive!

John,
I don't quite understand what is happening to you. We subscribe to just the Wall Street Journal and nothing else. We did not have trouble in Europe with any of our devices when we worked over there. A

There are a lot of scams which are trying to attract a crowd to their website to get a traffic. They are collecting your private info to sell it. Once I needed to get a professional exam help in florida i've searched through many websites. As a result I've started to get a lot of spam calls and mails. So be careful with Google or it is better to use Private Connections known as VPN.

Most of them are total scams and should be avoided. Almost all of them are just phishing for personal information or contact lists so they can broaden their base and increase their SEO and overall website presence and influence.
Be especially of all the phony political surveys. Some of those are put out by hackers wanting your personal info which can give them access to your credit card and banking info.
As you may or may not have noticed I've really pulled in the reins on my website presence overall and am pretty much just posting on my own website and linking to other sites i.e. AR, FB, LI, etc.
Even AR has become inundated with a lot of SPAM lately. I'm getting hits on posts I wrote years ago from SPAMMERS. It's an ominous world we're living in.

I have found that not clicking through and deleting solicitations like this a good defense... whether it's a phone, tablet or computer. Not sure what scams you are referring to... I just returned from Russia and Germany and had no issues with phone or laptop.
