My personal preference is always dark hardwood flooring... mostly because I grew up in old buildings and lived in pre-war buildings in NYC as an adult... so it was all hardwoods throughout, except in kitchens and bathrooms which was normally tile. I prefer nice tile in the bathrooms and kitchen, however. In my area, hardwoods are very popular (including in the kitchen). Tile in bathrooms is fine, but not so much anywhere else in the house. In more modestly priced homes we are seeing more wood-style laminate these days.

Hardwood. By far, the preference is hardwood!
A far 2nd choice in kitchens and entryways is tile that looks like hardwood. And, 3rd for kitchens and basements would be engineered vinyl that is waterproof and looks like hardwood. Do you see a trend.
In the bedrooms, 1st choice is hardwood, 2nd choice carpet.
Strong preference here for solid hardwood as homes are built on plywood and solid hardwood last MUCH longer.

I'm in California but my answer would likely be the same regardless of my location -- "it depends". So many different factors come into play including personal preference, price/budget, fashion, practicality and likely many more.
I'm sure Flooring Expert Extraordinaire Debbie Gartner can share some trends.

Hardwood is popular in our area. Actually hand scraped hardwood is favored. Some people want this in the whole home and others want carpet in bedrooms as well as large tile in wet areas. Me? I love hardwood floors!

Most of the homes I show are hardwood. There are a some that have hardwood with carpet in the bedrooms. Few that have hardwood and tile in the kitchen and bathrooms. And even fewer with carpet and laminate or vinyl.
My choice is hardwood I like the look of it. The large tiles in bathrooms.

My personal taste? I love reclaimed wood, bamboo, stamped concrete. What's typical for my area? Carpet in bedrooms, ceramic tile elsewhere. Many homes have all tile. It's hot here and that's a cool floor.

BIG variety in my market, depends on age and price point. My personal favorite is vinyl plank flooring. I used that when it was relatively new to the market when I built my new office and it's held up remarkably well with very heavy traffic. Armstrong is my brand of choice. I plan to use it throughout my next house with a possible exception of bathrooms which will likely get tile.

I personally can not stand carpet. Aged wood is my personal admiration. But the most popular in here is so called engineering wood since it comes in so many choices and relatively easy and cheap to install.

Too many to name. Hardwoods are still popular. Bamboo, carpet, Brazilian Cherry, and I'm seeing a little more of this natural stone flooring. https://www.msistone.com/flooring-tile/
I also see more recycled old floor boards with 4-8" widths that came out of old homes and barns.

Fred,
There is an irregular travertine tile that is beautiful and used as flooring here in Santa Barbara. Hardwood is big and recently we saw a house that was done in mahogany. Quite often, you will see bedrooms carpeted.
Our fafe is either the travertine tile I was describing or oak hardwood which we had in our home in Los Angeles and Napa. A

Hardwood (no laminate) is the preferred flooring, by FAR in the Charlotte area. For me I have dark hardwoods throughout my home, including my kitchen and with the exception of the tile in my baths and laundry room.
In my opinion, hardwood never goes out of style!

Hardwood, including vinyl and tile that look like wood, is popular here too. I prefer carpet in in the bedrooms, laminate in the bathrooms and laundry room, and tile or wood in living areas.
When we built, I insisted on carpet in the living room since I knew our future kids would be crawling and playing on it and I wanted something soft on my knees when I was on the floor with them. It has been longer than anticipated but the carpet is on its way out this winter!

Hardwood is popular here. Much new construction homes that are higher end have hardwood in the office/den and great room and carpet everywhere else. Lower end have vinyl and carpet.
Personally I hate hardwood. And I want to be able to sit on my living room floor with cushy carpet. We also have kids and a dog with long nails. We built a home and did Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) that looks like hardwood in our kitchen, dining, entry and office. It actually cost us $600 more than the standard hardwood the builder was going to use. -Kasey

Well, being as I am here in the Old Dominion, hardwoods still reign, although tile is okay in bathrooms (especially if you have heated floors). For lower level rec rooms in basements, we typically see carpet. And in some cases, carpet in upstairs bedrooms. So, on average, we'll see 2-3 types of flooring in most houses.
There are always the outliers, of course...

Chicago = land of hardwood floors (real).
People can't afford them so they turn to laminate. My stomach turns when I see the junk people are paying for. In 5 years it looks like crap.
But .... that same floor they could have carpeted for 1/2 the price & it would look like crap in 5 years.
People say laminate or hardwood is cleaner but why don't I see that 'difference' on my socks when I come home? I am tired of 'dusting' peoples floors with my feet. It's gross.
Personal preference: It's real or nothing. Hardwood is tough to take care of no matter what others say.

There are some laminates that are difficult to tell if it is laminate or engineering wood flooring. We see hardwood flooring in living areas including kitchen, and carpet in bedrooms, at least in the burbs. In the city you may see hardwood throughout.
