According to a long time builder client of mine solar shingles (which have been available for a while now) are not as efficient as panels.  Also, they are more expensive, which is fine if they work/look better.  

We have solar (owned) and a Tesla and save a ton of money on solar.  Yes, I would consider shingles if they were proven to be better should the need ever arise.

As far as I know, we only get our underwear in a bunch when people use the Q&A to shamelessly promote themselves... not for including a link to a news article on new technology.    I briefly heard about the Tesla solar roof tiles, but haven't read the details.  Personally, I've been wondering why someone hasn't done it sooner.

They solved the problem most people have with solar on the roof, it was unattractive. 

Oh I really like the look of them and hadn't realized these had come out. They are expensive, but like most anything, will likely come down in price in the next few years.

Due to shingles constantly blowing off of our roof, we are currently switching over to standing seam metal roof. We never considered solar, but our utility bills are fairly low so I doubt if solar would make much sense for us.

I know that expression as "not getting your knickers in a twist." This looks interesting as a roofing material. Haven't seen it in my areas as yet, though.

Much prettier than the existing solar shingles I looked at a few years ago.  I don't think any of them really match my architecture though.  Maybe in a few years they'll have more of a traditional "comp. shingle" look to them and the prices will be worth it (and batteries to store the power for night time use too).  Also, for me, the ability to go off-grid is a deal breaker.  These would need to be able to support my power needs 24x7.

They look many times better in appearance, than the solar panels that I currently see on roofs here - wow! - these look 'nice'.  I think many homeowners lease as opposed to own them, which comes up in a home sale, as a major consideration for purchase Nathan Gesner.  I do not hear specific brand names, so I would have to read up on Tesla's.  Thanks for the question!   

I love this stuff, but the Koch brothers are spending millions to hire the politicians and "experts" to discredit this type of thing.

The new epa may be outlawing this type of thing any day now.

I don't know butit's moving in the right direction. Seems to me they are pretty priecy at this point.

Interesting, Nathan Gesner - I don't mind the links, just FYI!  But, as to the solar shingles, we aren't seeing much of this at all in our area. Looks like Teri Pacitto has some great advice for you though! 

I liked their intro  a year ago and will utilize them when appropriate. Every new home should wear them!

I saw it a year ago in SF Solar Energy show. They need to design special shoes for workers. Can be nasty to maintain.

I asked a Stanford prof why big buses do not have solar panel. The response was cities have high rises with shadow over. They did stress & shake test on them. The movement break up the connection and transistors no longer work....

I think it is a phenomenal idea, but the cost is too high since we should b=not rely on Federal credits. This is a manufacturer subsidy and I don't agree with it, since taxpayers carry the burden for a small segment of the population who buy this product.

I think this is an excellent idea.  Especially for areas where electricity is expensive and/or sporadic.

I am not familiar with this product.
