the best advice is to pack the essentials separtely from the rest of the items in the home....and carry them with you if your move is local...otherwise, label them properly to know they're essentials...

Oh I could go on and on, and perhaps it's now too late in the day. I give buyers a checklist, and always tell them to plan on it taking longer than they expect. And prepare a box of the stuff you know you will need right away when you are getting settled and label it - coffee pot, toiletries, etc. - so you can easily find it when needed.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

I coach exactly as Jeff Dowler & Barbara Todaro do - with a list and to be sure to pack those essentials because finding them among the multitude of boxes is very difficult!

Color-coding boxes (for each room) with sticky-dots or colored labels works wonders too!

Unpack 1 room at a time...kitchen, then the master...

I hope their moving day is going well, Bob!

I have had some bad experiences with moving companies but my last move was incredible.  I would suggest doing a lot of research to find the right moving company, I realize this is a little late for your son.  My next best suggestion would be to make sure they get a good night's rest and start fresh in the morning.

First, is to have ALREADY PACKED everything Bob Crane - family is never happy to have to wrap and pack, when they are just there to carry and load - HA!  Been there!!  And if there are professional movers, they get paid by the hour, so making them wait can be costly, especially if they were not hired to pack for you!  Second, is to have some kind soul make-up your bed, when it gets assembled in your bedroom, because it's usually a very long and tiring day, and hard to drag yourself from the shower to then make that bed - falling asleep on the mattress has happened!  Third, is to already have a 'time' set aside - like later that day or first thing the next morning - to go back to that empty house or apartment and clean it, because just moving out is never enough, and you may have left something behind!  Best of Luck to Josh and Hannah - and enjoy your new home!!

Have a plan in place long before moving day and always hire a good company to help with the move. Know exactly where you want to place furniture in your new home in advance. Mark packed boxes clearly and where to put them in the new home immediately.

1. Make sure you have already called for transitioning of services (internet, water, electricity, trash, etc.).

2. Make sure to purchase (the night before) bottled water and snacks.  Also, grab a six pack of beer or drink of choice for when the job is done.

3. Utilitize suitcases to pack clothes (saves in packing expenses/cardboard boxes).  Sell off anything you don't use prior to moving day to reduce moving unnecessary items and to lighten the load.

4. Keep a few trash bags, toilet paper, paper towels and regular towels handy.

5. Find a good moving company or a few strong friends, one with a truck perferably.

6. Move quickly!  Get the job done.  Get things out and then take your time putting things up at the new place.

7. Find a good cleaning company or ask friends to help with cleaning your old place.

Make sure everything is packed.  Have a carry-on type suitcase with toiletres and a couple days worth of clothes.  Growing up moving day always equalled pizza for dinner (partly because the city used to give out coupons when people moved, and partly because it's easy).  Have them deliver plates and napkins too, or go out for dinner.

Make a goal to get all the boxes unpacked and put away within a day or two, tops.  If you don't, you'll be like me with that one unpacked box six years later...

Moving day:  Hopefully they started packing early and marked all the boxes with the contents and intended room locations.  Then it's a matter of having lots of (strong & careful) helpers... or a good moving company.
