No one listens or reads Annette. How about the one where my sister starts telling me staging techniquesd on my parents house & I ask her 'do you know what I do for a living'? .... she just blathers on about all the lights have to be on for showings.

That is correct. I've been saying for 25 years, we need to stop keeping what we do and how much we do a secret.

those who need to know, know.... those who are thinking about selling, know... those who do the right investigating and searching online and notice offline, know....

Many don't, but I try to explain to them what I do as the opportunity permits.

Most people never understand, not even after you tell them.

Really, I dont' think some of them do.  I saw a trailer for HGTV's Property Brothers the other day and the "construction twin" asks the "realtor twin" "what is it you do".  Perception is reality.  Some people think we just drive around in pretty cars showing houses and collect big checks.

Most of them don't unless we tell them. And even then it's impossible to convey everything we have to do in a given transaction.

Sometimes their perceptions are incorrect.

This is my second career, and at one point, a few years after I started in this business my husband said to me, "I had absolutely no idea how much work realtors do. It's incredible."

Almost all people have no idea what is entailed in this business. They also have the mistaken impression we're all rich. Bwaaa haaa haaa.

They wouldn't believe it if I told them!!! Too much to comprehend!!!   

     They know exactly what we do, thanks to HGTV and other reality TV shows.

With the technology realtors are consultants....  

I absolutely think most people have no clue what I do... even once I explain it lol 

Our job is all about educating the public so I don't mind the question at all.

Actually, when I went to occupational therapy it was very similar in a lot of ways to my physical therapist, OT just goes beyond PT. I did both for almost 3 years. So it would be imperative to discern and educate your clients as you meet them on what you do. It's our fault if "they" don't get it. We need to educate our public.

All the time - I specially love it when I get other agents call me to do things they're agent should be doing but is too busy

All day, every day!  To quote many, "Oh! It must be SO MUCH FUN looking at houses all day"...

Annette - I am sure that people don't know, or understand what we do. I am sure some don't even care to know.

They have a sense of what I do but I don't think they completely comprehend it all.

Being a real estate agent looks so easy which is one reason so many enter the business, then find out how it really is and leave it.

I constantly remind agent to always tell everyone what you do.  Too many just assume that their neighbors and friends know what we do!

Yes, many don't fully understand, even if they think they do.  We even had an investor client who had bought and sold many properties with us decide to become an agent work in our brokerage.  He got licensed and lasted maybe a half a year and 2-3 transactions working with buyers until he called it quits, told us he had no idea what our job entailed until now and that he'd gladly give up his license and pay our fees to have us continue to represent him.  He didn't wanna do it after he realized what "it" was :-) Kasey

My sisters still mispronounce "realtor". It does show lack of interest and not really caring about what we really do and how hard we really work.

The ones who don't know what i do never become clients that need to ask.
