Sorry, but I've not had this issue. And I'm an old person who has moved many times and have never done that. Working with people in their 70's right now who are packing up to stage their home and I've been in and out of their house for a week and have not see this.

Not the people I work with.  Clean it up ... get it out and keep it out while the home is listed for sale.

Wow!  No, I was told never to put my stuff on the stairs.  I only block the door when I'm at a hotel.

They use that as their staging area.  They just fail to move it into a moving box.

Jeff Pearl Unfortunately, you already set a precedence by your many trips to the basement. They are looking for someone to do the work and it looks like they found you.

give them guidance, and they will follow your instructions...unless they are physically not able to do it....then you need to set them up with the right assistance.... moving books:  high school football player.... call the coach and get some names for bullwork to be done.... it's a good workout!! and you pay them a $15/hour....

Dollars speak.  Remind them that if there is not a clearance on the steps and someone falls down the stairs, that will be an expensive issue to adress.  At the very least, move books to all one side, so someone can hold onto the railing. 

Let them know they shouldn't give someone a reason to sue....and they seem to have hundreds of reason on the floor! 

I haven't had that experience, and my bet is this could happen to a number of people, not just the elderly. Definitely a hazard

I try to give elderly and others less choices when I am involved.....

Never had that situation. I just tell them to sit back and supervise or you photo shows the result!

The only place to start would be at the bottom and work up just like in business!

OH MY, sure hope you did not have this home listed!
