No, the Millennials are not getting a bad rap.

However, there is a segment within that stereotypical group that is giving the whole bunch a bad rap - the "snowflakes".  The people who whine for a "safe space" when their candidate doesn't get elected, the people who have college degrees but no usable skills.

FWIW, I had a" tiny house" back in the day... it was called a 1968 Volkswagen van.  Blue and white, with a chrome VW emblem on the front.

Yes they are, as a parent I can say that they are pretty impressive on a global, political & environmental level. I've employed 2 in the last 4 years and I sold to one this summer and it was a wonderful transaction. I get that they don't all "get it" from our point of view, but I will say they a great group over all and take issue with the whole nonsense surrounding them.

There seem to be generalizations about every generation, good and bad, and many exceptions to the stereotypes. And the media seems to promote these even more. The reality is often different.

The Move.com economist said millenials want a home like their parents had in the burbs not all the lofts and tiny houses that people think they do. They have to settle because of huge school debt. I don't know that I agree.

John,

I have met some outstanding millenials who were inspiring, lovely, generous and an asset to be around, and likewise I have met boomers who were that way, as well as every generation and every group.  I have also met the opposites in every group.  Personally, I have an intense dislike for lumping people in one group or another, and I used to argue with my professors in grad school, when they lumped authors by some idiotic generalization...It is just the way I think

Hi John,
I think the Millennials are a very interesting generation.  Like, most groups of people, you can't totally generalize but there is certainly a segment that is in the category you describe.  It's definitely worth taking seriously and serving their vision of life.    If you're going to be taking this on as a focus, may I respectfully suggest you spell Millennial  correctly?

My Son is a Millennial. We have to remember this generation has seen and experienced a great deal. From the start of the internet to the financial collapse. I find they tend to work hard, watch their money and desire life situations to be simplified. I can see Millennials desiring tiny homes, it is an easier lifestyle and cost effective thus they can get out and do more. They may be technologically connected but they still like to get out and be social. Because of what most saw and experienced in the financial collapse, I think they will be more cautious in buying a home that could later cause a financial burden. Long term, I think we will see less foreclosures because most saw their own family or knew someone who went through it so they will be cautious in not getting consumed with mortgage debt.

Maybe they are getting a bad wrap. That's a shame.

I'm curious to see how this tiny house fade plays out. One assistant in our office is really into doing this. I can see it being popular in my area, because of the mountain property we have available and the affordable construction costs of building a tiny house on a large acreage parcel with nice mountain views. Those view parcels aren't just for the big houses anymore.

My son is a millenial - he and his wife are amazing and very frugal. They have seen our generation waste our country's resources and our own - we have given them massive debt and diminished opportunities.  My son and his wife live in a modest 2 bedroom NY apartment even though they could afford much more. My husband wants them to move to something bigger but they are staying put and saving their money so they can buy something truly nice.  I believe they value experiences over collections of things and they make do with the space they have.  I think it is a mistake to characterize a generation.

Millennials, like any generation, offer a marketing opportunity.  As far as this particular generation getting a bad rap --- individuals make the difference and identifying an entire group as this(or that) is a waste of time.

I serve many of them in the form of friends of my grown boys, children of friends/clients and those getting jobs in our financial and medical sector here in Charlotte.  I really enjoy helping them - I love teaching, don't mind texting (which that is typically the ONLY way they want to communicate!) and don't mind their inquisitiveness!

I think the traditions of having a big family have faded and that big home is no longer necessary.  We see a lot of downsizing and young peole not wanting the bigger homes.
