Sally and David,
That is a great question.
I actually think that they are huge waste of money.
I just looked up some information about Fonality (a phone system) yesterday. I was looking for some code to make a web app. Now I am seeing really nice big ads from them as I read my Trump/Clinton news. They are buying all of those ads and I am not even in the market for a phone system.
I also have a client who asked me to do some work on their site. Now I see their Adwerx ads everywhere. I am really not looking to buy anything in their market, but just because I looked at their site as we were working on it, I am getting hammered with ads.
I actually looked at that client's site about 6 months ago, and I am still getting all of their ads.
What is sad is even if you are using ad blocking, the person is still paying for the ad. The ad vendor considers it displayed. Your personal browser is blocking it, but the ad server is still serving the ad up.
I am sure that the "re-marketing" is a good tool for some people, but it has to be used better. There should be some business rules. If I were a full-time realtor, I would want to have a person visit my site over 2-3 different days before I would want the "re-marketing" ads to reach them. Then I would want them REALLY sporadic, so people perceive them as ads and not CREEPY STALKERS!!!
Happy Halloween! :)

I don't get any anymore. duckduckgoduck doesn't track you. And I have another computer for checking stuff which never tracks me either as they don't know who it is.

I use an adblocker to avoid all advertising, even the youtube ads before the videos. I don't buy advertising because I'm against even seeing it.

I find them intriguing but at the same time a little concerning knowing that my online activity is constantly being tracked. I typically do not click on ads so the affect it has on my experience is minimal.
In my market, as a lender, I find that the digital "face everywhere' service definitely has value and has generated some business for me. In this day and age, younger people look to the internet to answer questions and refer them to business rather than a personal referral.

I don't get those ads - you get them if you allow G to track you, use Chrome or any other site that allows tracking
Turn it off and the ads go away !

It is annoying to Google something and then see it in an ad no matter what site i log on

When I first started seeing them I found it intriguing. Now I don't even notice them because I have been desensitized to them.

I have anti script and ad blocking software that prevents them from following me around.
