We have several thrift stores that support local animal shelters. That is my charity of choice. It's really up to the seller. 

Well, when I downsized my fathers house I was blown off by so many charities I can't begin to tell you. SA came & saved the day. The rest we had to pay to have hauled away by 1-800 JUNK.

I don't think people realize that they will not take everything - they are very discriminating on what they want.

Goodwill doesn't pick up stuff in my area. We have donation centers that are drive thru.

I don't have a preference but I did just have a client say Salvation Army because they help veterans.

They are both good organizations.  Our experience with Salvation Army has been wornderful.  You can schedule a pick up and they show up on time.  Goodwill has not been as good.  So we prefer Salvation Army.  However, each market is different, and the opposite may be true elsewhere.  A

City Mission in Erie, PA as it is local charity and does a great job helping the less fortunate.

Here I would go with Salvation Army. We have others like Blue Ridge Hospice, Blossom and Bloom, etc that I like better.They both use the money raised from selling donations to help people with hospice and assisted living.

They are the same, even Good will is ''for profit'' corporation. 

I'd choose smaller local charities. 

I don't personally have a preference, Fred. In my area only Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity pick up furniture. 

I actually go for option #3: Wounded Warriors.

It is a personal preference and I don't make this decision for a seller. I also recommend the Habitat ReStore as an option.

Salvation Armyand St Vincents are both good charities, Gooodwill is a large corporation Pretending to be a charity.

The Salvation Army has always been really good.

I think that either is good see if there is a local organization that could use them maybe?

O pretty much do the Goodwill for no particular reason. maybe because their location is the closest.

I dont know much about Goodwill, but I like Salvation Army, so I'd go that route

We give a lot to Goodwill as do many people in my area. Salvation army is good too thou.

Salvation Army... hands down!!!  Their track record with proper use of donors money is way better!  Do some research.  You will find this to be true.

Good luck!  Out here both are EXTREMELY PICKY about what they take when it comes to furniture.  Even the habitat for humanity Re-Store people.  I suggest Craigslist and try to make some money.  Better chance of getting someone to actually take it!

Fred,  I prefer Salvation Army simply because the experience is far better than Goodwill.  

We normally give our stuff the the Salvation Army.

I have a long history of giving/donating to both and when they both implemented policies to no longer accept the old style TV's (I have 6 to donate) because their customers only wanted FLAT screens so they could play their Xboxes and PS 4, I stopped

I mean really, you can't afford to feed yourself and you have to have a FLAT screen TV.. Really?

There may be a more local one that would give the same tax benefit. Don't know the legal structure of the two you menion, meaning - how much of the proceeds go to admin and not to charity.

I would recommend the charity that is not going to sell it to a person in need.

Goodwill is not a charity but a for profit company that it was reported gives zero to charity. They say their charity is they give jobs to people. I would choose the Salvation Army as i know how much they do for the community

There are many options in our area including the two you mention.  Many people have their personal favorites.  I can provide names, people make their own choices.  

The Goodwill operations in my area went bankrupt earlier this year.  It was a big news story.  Apparently, they might be returning but I don't know the details.

I don't make recommendations on which charity is most appropriate for a client, customer or others since everyone has different viewpoints.

Salvation Armyhas a historic record of community service and incredible compassion, as an organization, regarding the human condition.

Goodwill, on the other hand runs one of  the largest retail organizations in the USA leading the 'shabby-chic' trend.

In the end, the situation may dictate I go with the one who can get their truck there the fastest.

I love the Salvation Army.  When I first moved to New York, I lived in a beautiful building they ran a residence for young women overlooking Gramercy Park.  They had another in Greenwich Village.  I think the Gramercy Park building may be luxury condos now. 

I haven't donated to either Salvation Army or Goodwill in ages. Our church runs a thrift shop and they rely on donations so we always donate to it.

I found the Goodwill was a lot more picky and won't take several things that the Salvation Army will...
