Thanks for educating me, Barbara! Batch will be our next choice when replacement is needed. Though we find we rarely use our disposal now that we compost most food waste.

I was going to say working and non-working, or properly installed and improperly installed. We also have four legged type.

We have ours in the sink.  As far as I know it doesn't work until you turn the switch on.  So I am clueless.

I didn't know about the second type you mentioned. I'll have to look into getting that type. When I was a kid my dad saved my hand in the nick of time. My sister and I were both doing dishes. She didn't know any better and went to turn on the disposal when I had my hand down in it. Thankfully my dad was right there and saw everything that was going on. 

Because of that incident disposals still kind of scare me. 

I like the second kind; the first one scares me.

I only  knew of the one "gobbler" disposal type. On new renters or owners, a crash course is recommended on what to put in there & how to unstuck them

Whern you ask Sandy she will tell you it is either Norm or the garbage can and usually the former wins.

If i didnt read the 2nd half of your question i would have guessed those that work right an dthose that groan and make noise like something is stuck in it. I do love the new ones Barbara Todaro 

Type two has many benefits. One being the elimination of garbage regurgitation when the switch is toggled.

This advance is garbage technology reminds me of those applied to swimming pool pumps and the vacuum interrupt capability.

Would/Should a real estate agent demonstrate such garbage disposal features during a home showing?

One has a switch on the wall and the other you have to depress and twist the top apparatus down in the drain to get it to come on. 

We call them Jack and Drake, very safe with children, Jack is a bit finicky, Drake eats anything.

LOL before I read the rest of your question my first thougth was - working or not working. But clearly there is more to this story. I didn't know this.  But I've never heard of anybody get hurt.....ever.
