I grew up on a farm where these where used to secure the cows during milking.  No idea what anyone would use these for in a house.

I actually know what a Stanchion is, but I can't think of a quip, so I refuse to answer on the grounds that I have nothing creative or funny to say and the real answer is boring. 

My first thought was exactly what Bob Crane said as my grandparents' barn had stanchions.

Then I saw Gary L. Waters, Broker Owner, Waters Realty of Brevard, LLC reference to navy ships, confirmed by my USN hubby, Dave.

Old Navy here...had them on ships.  But I guess they are everywhere.
