Howdy,  partner.  Most prefer a vertical position at the bar but for your window reference it's the horizontal direction.   This might also explain the unfortunate patron who consumes a bit too much.

My favorite local bar hang-out, Tack Room Tavern, next to the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California has a "saddle bar" if you want to mosey over there for a beer.

It's where cowboys can order drinks without having to get off their horses.

This has to be a rail of some sort to hold the horse's saddle to give him some rest.
