I'm glad Michael Jacobs included a picture of a window..we do use that term for windows that are located on the upper wall portion of a wall so more natural light can fill the room!

I'm glad Michael Jacobs included a picture, because I have never heard of them described as such (usually described as "how do I get blinds for those windows?")

Although I knew, I looked for the "historical" answer with the help of Mr. Google:
The technology of the clerestory appears to originate in the temples of ancient Egypt. The term "clerestory" is applicable to Egyptian temples, where the lighting of the hall of columns was obtained over the stone roofs of the adjoining aisles, through slits pierced in vertical slabs of stone. Clerestory appeared in Egypt at least as early as the Amarna period.

Typically clerestory was an upper level in a building like a church...
and hence, the clerestory windows... which threw light in the upper areas.
Transom windows don't really qualify.

I too am familiar with the idea, but not the term. I have also seen these on interior walls above doors in order to add light to a room - are those also considered "clerestory windows"?

They add alot to a room, outside of more light - very popular in homes in our niche Kathleen Daniels. They are high windows that are small (not tiny) and close to the ceiling - no need for blinds or shades - as no one can see in or out of them. It is a nice feature.

I had a general idea but now I know more. Seems to me most of them, because of the challenge of accessing, are only for light, not air.
