Most of this coaching is formulaic, idiotic, and done by people who probably haven't sold real estate in donkey's years. And then again, you know what they say... those who can do and those can't teach!

It seems to me her 'coach' needed to stress that the contacts needed to be Quality not necessarily Quantity.

Isn't this the same as most formula coaching? - I agree with Nina - "those who do..."

Talk to a hundred to get one viable has been said; just like handing out X amount of business cards is supposed to gain clients as well.

Hella, think that type of "contacting" is inappropriate for that event.

There is definitely no easy button or magic pill in real estate for sure but I do believe there some good coaches out there, sounds like this person just didn't find one of them.
Great post

I work well without supervision and oversight so I have no idea what "they" are teaching

Wow. My guess is that she didn't fully understand the coach's intentions.

I'm not sure if this is what the coach had in mind and that this may just be a poor interpretation by this young lady.

Hella,
We have seen it all! There are great coaches and terrible coaches, and that goes for every profession. And on occasion, some great coaches have the wrong type of person they are working with, which makes them look bad. A

I read your blog... fascinating, indeed! 100 is too many. I get the out-of-your-comfort zone concept but this is ridiculous in my opinion. While you're getting out of the box, you're making yourself look foolish and clueless.
You only need about 20 meaningful contacts per week to build a nice business.

That approach is annoying and basically useless as a coaching technique. I woiuld never consider using an agent that approached me in that manner.

If you've ever been in speach and debate courses, taken lessons with Toastmasters or attended any sales conference or workshop, this is absolutely "de rigour" for all trainees. The very thing you and I both find innately a part of our nature--the ability to talk to anyone about anything--is uniquely and painfully difficult for about 80 percent of the general populace. It is precisely this reason that Sales People get paid so much money and why NOT everyone can do it nor do it successfully. When I'm in "sales mode," I can pass out 50 business cards in an hour and get 5 of those people to call me back...why because I can make a "connection" with people without trying that hard. That, Hella, is our "super power" as sales people.
But for many, they need help, and coaches (as well as books on how to sell) routinely advise newbies to do this exact exercise. I wouldn't worry about it, its just ONE in a series of uncomfortable things your friend will be forced to do to attain a level of confidence with strangers. And she will eventually find a pattern and a sales banter that works for her and is uniquely her own. Until then, be kind and help when you can. Coaching can be very valuable to a lot of salespeople who struggle with "casual banter."

Hella, Sadly, they do. This only adds to the already negative reputation of the industry. Agents are gullible and believe if the "coach" says to do ... it must be the right thing to do. What a way to eat away at ones self-respect and dignity. I have nothing to do with so called real estate gurus and coaches.

new methods of coaching?? poor results....and it's all reflecting poorly on our industry and US....

I have very mixed emotions. As a new or newer agent one needs to develop skills ..... I never took them and work within my comfort zones.....

I think that she's going about it all the wrong way. Contacts yes, alienate your customers in the process, no.
Contacts = more sales, but not in her case lol.

Quantity has given way to quality. The results are much better. Feel sorry for this girl. She is living with 80's advice!

Not only is doing that a waste of time, she is hurting the organization she is volunteering to help. It would be better to introduce your self, leave off why (i.e. being coached to ask) and ask how you can help them with what they are to buy. If a person is interested, they will ask you for a card.

I love to see folks who are teachable!
People who act upon the instruction given.
There are way too many in the IDWDT bunch.

I dont know what she was taught, but the lessons may have been followed or they may have just been miss-understood.
Communicating is not something that comes natural to all, and even when taught not all learn to do so correctly.

That agent in your post needs to learn how to listen. She should have noticed the glazed look in the people she was talking to, and adjusted accordingly. Very unlikely she'll get any calls.
"Call 100 people" with no more instruction than that is not coaching!

That doesn't seem effective, so doesn't seem like a good idea. Hope they can get their money back.

I have seen this exercise performed before. It might not be to your style but it is probably can very useful for that agent.

Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor® - I have done BOLD training where we were supposed to contact 20 people every day and to earn a special pin, it was 100 contacts per day!
So, please do not consider this as coaching!
The real coaching company I can mention is Buffini & Company ! Totally different! (I can go on and on and on....)
